Twilight Series II 2019 (Race 1)

The Twilight Series II 2019 got off to a wet wet start, as sailors were greeted with a refreshing shower on the first leg towards Changi Buoy. The east-south-easterly breeze gave participants a nice initial windward beat, complete with shifty and patchy winds.

Leading the IRC class was none other than Invictus, who capitalized on a false start by Jong Dee to take an early lead in the 3-way contest. Unfortunately the lack of winds towards the end of the race and work in the evening meant that Invictus skipper Justin Lean had to forfeit the race and retire prematurely. Series I winners Waka Tere emerged the victor by default, starting their campaign with a bullet. Jong Dee settled for 2nd, left lamenting what could have been if they scored a good start.

We welcome the return of Simba to Club Racing, after a long 1 and a half year break due to boat maintenance and repair. They start this series in PY Class, but are looking to return to IRC in the coming weeks. We also welcome visiting yacht Caminata, skippered by CSC Member, Clive Van Onselen. Visiting for the weekend, Clive had to schedule a Caminata‘s first Twilight Sail with the Club. Withe the 2 boats above, the PY Class sees a total of 7 boats participating. Topping the fleet was little Brio, whose skipper has also returned from a short break in Korea. She sailed well in the light airs to stay ahead of bigger and faster boats like Boreas and Minx, securing a 1st place on handicap and missing out on line honours by 7 seconds! 2nd place was taken by Simba, a deserving result for the returning Dehler. Completing the podium in 3rd 2 weeks in a row is Southern Light, only just sneaking ahead of last week’s Sunday Series Race 1 winner Olmeto after corrected time.

In the Cruising Multihull Class, Cicak made amends for their performance at the Sunday Series, sailing well 3-up to finish ahead of Kaze and Eeepai in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Despite her best efforts, Miss Visayan struggled to break into the top 3, settling for 4th. 2 participants in the Beach Catamaran Class and 2 participants in the Weta Class meant that sailors had to keep a close eye on each other, with very little room for error. Scott McCook draws from his wealth of experience to sail a good race, scoring Gulf‘s first win for the Twilight Series Beach Catamaran Class. Persian Cat‘s new owner Shaun Norris is still getting to know the boat, and we look forward to seeing more of her in the coming races! Tim Jackson’s? Itchy-Go made it 2 wins from 2 weekends, comfortably notching another bullet in the Weta Class. We hope to see more participation moving forward – lets give the regulars a proper challenge!
