Twilight Series III – Race 5 [FINAL]
Blessed with a fresh cold breeze from the west, sailors received all the winds and very little rain from the weather system that was brewing yesterday afternoon, providing a pleasant (albeit a little chilly) race to end the Twilight Series for 2020.
In the IRC Class, Red Rum One executed a good start to take an early lead – providing the perfect springboard for her to extend the distance between her and the rest of the fleet. The Archambault 40 eventually took an easy line honours and her first win for the series, a sweet end to her Twilight Series III campaign. She completes the series with a total of 9 points – taking 3rd place. Waka Tere and Adona were the top 2 contenders for the Series III title, locked in a stalemate after finishing in 2nd and 3rd respectively. As both boats had exactly the same results, the tie-breaker came down to who finished ahead in yesterday’s race – therefore handing Waka Tere the Series III win. For the overall Twilight 2020 Challenge Trophy, Waka Tere completes the year in a jubilant mood, successfully defending her title with a total of 4 points, just 1 point ahead of Jong Dee.
The PY Class was also very closely contested, with many boats vying for the top spot in Series III. Yesterday’s conditions was quite favourable for the smaller boats, with the top 4 boats all under 25ft. The crew aboard Jonty J were ecstatic, having sailed a superb race to take line honours and their first bullet on corrected time. After successfully winning a protest, Notus claims her first podium position, taking 2nd place on corrected time. This comes after consistently placing 4th in the last 3 Twilight Races – a positive end to her campaign. Brio completes the podium in 3rd. When the numbers were crunched, her 3rd place finish was sufficient to clinch the Twilight Series III victory on 9 points – winning a tie-breaker with Marut. Coming in 3rd was also another tie-breaker, as Simba edged out Notus by scoring a bullet in Race 1. Marut was the biggest winner last night, as her performance in both series II & III earned her a total of 4 points and the overall Twilight 2020 PY Challenge Trophy.
Our favourite Multihull teams return to match race once again – as Cicak gave it one last attempt to snatch the bullet from Jaza Too…. and they did! Cicak did everything well, from a good start to good boat speed and successfully holding her lead over Jaza Too to claim a hard-earned victory. With her Series III win, Jaza Too made it 2 bullets from 2 series to take home the 2020 Twilight Multihull Challenge Trophy.
A similar match race took place between Stray Catz and Madfish II – two of the most competitive beach catamarans currently active in Singapore. The latter made light work of the conditions and her opponent, tackling the strong currents well on the beat to defend successfully against the chasing Stray Catz. Her win allows her to take Series III with 3 bullets and 10 points, beating 2nd placed Stray Catz by 3 points. Despite a no-show yesterday, Balqis II manages to stay the best of the rest, completing the podium in 3rd on 14 points. With poor attendance from the remaining boats, the fight for the Twilight Challenge Trophy this year was also between the same boats – all 3 boats tie on 4 points, with Madfish II winning Series III to break the tie and emerge the Twilight Beach Catamaran Champions for 2020.
Thank you all for participating in our Twilight Series races in 2020 – we look forward to more winds and exciting sailing for our Sunday Series III Race 5 later today!
