CSC Laser & 29er Open 2021 (Day 2)

Sailors were yet again treated to a hot day with light winds and strong currents on the morning of Day 2. A pattern emerged as the day progressed, with the strength of the tidal flow peaking in the early afternoon and winds shifting from a light NE to a strengthening Easterly breeze. The Race course was situated at a Y-junction, an open area in-between Ubin, Tekong and Mainland which made for very interesting sailing conditions.

Leaders Dylan Ng / Marvin Tan (SGP 2446) kicked off Day 2 with a hiccup, scoring their worst race for the series, placing 4th. Despite the initial scare, they soon settled into their groove to complete the remaining 2 races with a 2nd and a 1st to emerge victorious on 8 points in the 29er class. A strong performance by Russel Yom / Dylan Fang (SGP 2869) in Day 2 rewarded them with a 2nd place overall, just 2 points behind the winners. The only all-female pair in the fleet, Faith Ning Koy / Annika Chui (SGP 1539) claimed 3rd with 17 points. They managed to sneak in a bullet for Race 5, a result which must have been one of the highlights of their weekend.

Also starting off Day 2 on the wrong foot was Laser 4.7 sailor Yong Ler (02), as he stumbled to an 11th place finish in Race 5. He soon regained his composure to finish strongly – scoring a 1st and 2nd in Races 6 and 7 respectively to take the Laser 4.7 title 13 points ahead of closest rival, Ryan Sei (SGP 214846). Comeback kid Joshua Cheong (SGP 212221) leapfrogged into 3rd after discarding his OCS from Day 1 and registering 2 bullets in Day 2 to finish the regatta strongly with a total of 33 points. In 5th place, Meghan Tan (SGP 205778) placed as the best girl performer, ahead of Abigail Koh (SGP 214237) in 6th. Excellent results from both!

It seemed like most of the leaders from Day 1 had to shake off pre-race jitters, as Laser Radial defending champion Jonathan Lio (SGP 203819) also registered blemishes on his record after a clean sheet from Day 1, placing 4th and 5th in Races 5 and 6 respectively. That however was not enough for any of the chasing pack to close the gap, as he finished with a bullet in Race 7 to successfully defend the title on a total of 9 points. 2nd and 3rd were both tied on 20 points, but 2020 Laser 4.7 winner Darius Lee (SGP 197833) broke the tie with three 2nd place finishes to Zachary Khoo (SGP 214242)’s one. Notable mentions:

8/22 – Jania Ang (SGP 214720), best girl performer despite a DNF in Race 5 and RET in Race 7
15/22 – Liam Willett (SGP 197420), best CSC performer

Experience definitely came out on top in the Laser Standard class, as Olympians Colin Cheng (CHENG) and Koh Seng Leong (KOH) schooled the competition with a clean three bullets and three 2nd place finishes each to complete the series in 1st and 2nd respectively. 2020 champion Elliot Drake (9595) tied with Chung Pei Ming (2) on 19 points after 7 races, but manages to successfully break the tie and claim 3rd with the bullet he scored in Race 3.
