Twilight Series I 2021 – Race 1

After a very wet saturday morning, sailors were not optimistic about the weather for the rest of the afternoon. With a planned Twilight Race at 4pm, Race Organizers kept the fingers crossed – hoping for some breeze to carry the sailors through the course. Thankfully a light westerly wind graced the East Johor Straits, setting the stage for a tactical beat up to Squance Buoy for the first leg.

In the IRC class, Red Rum One won! The Archambault 40 sailed well in the light air, capitalizing on their superior boat speed and just barely escaping the doldrums on the return leg from Changi Buoy. Having missed out on the wind line Red Rum One was on, Waka Tere, Jong Dee & Adona had an unrushed sail to the finish line in the same order. Having managed to successfully stay close to the other 2 boats, Adona claimed 3rd just behind Waka Tere on corrected time.

The super light and patchy conditions, paired with a slow & steady incoming tide proved too much for some of the keelboats in the PY class. Jen’s Jaunt, Southern Light & Notus all threw in the towel on the downwind leg towards Changi Buoy, reducing the finishing fleet to 5. Special commendations to Olmeto for sticking to their guns. Persevering through the poor conditions, she was rewarded with a light southerly breeze just 20 minutes before the time limit was up. At the top end of the fleet, Boreas scored her first win with first-time skipper Matt Brooks at the helm. Not surprisingly, little boats Marut & Brio placed 2nd and 3rd respectively – both taking full advantage of the prevailing conditions.

Light winds seemed to not be an issue for the attending trimarans in the Multihull Class. Positioning herself most windward on the start line helped Kaze clinch a good start, eventually rounding Squance Buoy ahead of Jaza Too and Cicak. The Dash 750 stretched her lead on the downwind leg, finishing with a comfortable 3 minute gap over the other Dash, Jaza Too.

It pays to just attend the race, rain or shine! Just ask Nick & Daniel on Ripple V. They bucked the trend and went sailing on their Viper F16 yesterday, representing the beach catamaran class. Their attendance earned them a bullet, starting their Twilight campaign on a positive note.

Congratulations to all the winners – thank you all for participating in our first ever Twilight Race for 2021! Next week (2nd May) some of us will be heading north-west to Ketam Channel, where we conduct a beach clean-up on the surrounding shores. If you’d like to join us for this activity, please email us at enquiry@csc.org.sg for more information.
