Sunday Series II 2021 – Race 2

An offshore breeze greeted sailors on the start line for Race 2 of our Sunday Series II. With our IRC fleet growing, it seemed only right to separate the starting sequences of the IRC and PY fleets – a move welcomed by sailors from both classes.

However, sailors do need to be reminded that if the starting sequence signaled is not for your class, it is only courteous to stay well clear of the start line [Please refer to Racing Rules of Sailing 23.1]. This is all the more important with the increasing level of competition.

A quartet of F16s represented the Beach Catamaran Class, led by the newly decorated Ripple V. Sporting new red sticker designs on her bows, she was an easy spot for the photographer amidst the large number of boats. Rounding North Angler in the lead, she scored victory comfortably ahead of returning champions Madfish II. Bad Influence completed the podium in 3rd. Special mention to newbies Matt & Kellie on Babe! After a 15 minute crash-course on starting sequences and marks of the course, they completed their first ever Sunday Series race in a very respectable timing (just 10 minutes behind Bad Influence).

A trio of Trimarans participated in the Multihull Class, led by Xavier Glenard’s Kaze. Staying in the pressure and out of the strong incoming tide, she rounded North Angler ahead of the pack and sped off to finish in first place well ahead of the fleet. After a captivating story on Cruising World and a quick follow-up from the skipper of Cicak, we see the return of Captain Fatty on the helm of a trimaran! Steering her to a commendable 2nd place finish, it was a bittersweet end for one of Cicak‘s star crew – Lauren Hill. Having to continue her studies in England, this will be her last Sunday Series with us for a long while. Next week’s Twilight Race will be her final sailing race in Singapore. All the best Lauren, please continue sailing wherever you are!

~~A duo~~ Just kidding. In the IRC Class, Waka Tere made amends for her poor performance in last week’s Twilight Race, sailing well in the off-wind conditions to place first on corrected time. Despite obtaining line honours, Red Rum One struggled to lengthen her lead on the fleet, settling for 5th on handicap. It was a close fight between Born in Fire and Adona for 2nd and 3rd. The former edged out the J24 by a mere 5 seconds on corrected time, maintaining their good form from recent weeks.

The biggest fleet yesterday was none other than the PY Keelboat Class. Despite having obtained a revalidated IRC, Simba chose to continue sailing in the PY Class for the rest of this series, a decision which reaped near-immediate rewards, emerging victorious in a 14-strong fleet. Skipper Atul attributes a weight-losing trip to the toilet pre-start as a significant factor for his team’s win, in addition to good sail trim and a clean hull. Coming in a very close 2nd and 3rd were Ikaroa and New Blue Eyes respectively.

Twilight Series II 2021 – Race 1

The conditions were very difficult with only a 2 to 3 knot breeze from the South Easterly direction and a steadily increasing outgoing tide. This was a definite cocktail for frustration.

Sadly, none of the multihulls and the lone beach cat made the start, the outgoing tide got the better of them and all didn’t make it back after trying.

The keelboats weren’t spared the sluggish breeze and the outgoing also. Simba and Southern Light were both caught being a little early and were cruelly punished for their miscalculation. It took them a long while but their persistence saw both coming back to re-start. It was clearly a day for the small boats, with Monserrat scoring their first win ever in a Twilight Race! With a clean bottom and a recently serviced keel, the 22ft Catalina may be a boat to watch out for in subsequent races. Placing 2^nd was another light and nippy boat, Brio. She sneaked in just 40 seconds ahead of 3^rd placed Olmeto on corrected time.

Repeating another near perfect start, Adona crossed the start line first and held on for a good part of the leg towards Changi Buoy before being overtaken by Red Rum One as they headed towards the mark. Steve Manning & Team redeemed themselves after their poor performance in last week’s Sunday Series II Race, scoring an emphatic victory in the IRC Class. It was a Dutch affair in 2^nd and 3^rd, with Adona and Minx completing the podium in that order.

The conditions were difficult but it was good to see that all the teams took it in their stride. Certainly very encouraging to see new-ish entrants Monserrat (1^st) and Windflirt (5^th) doing well in their first race of this series. Congratulations and keep up the momentum!

Sunday Series II 2021 – Race 1

We’re back!

After nearly 2 months of no racing, it was great to return to our usual weekend routine, starting with the Sunday Series II on 4th July. Prevailing Safe Management Measures require teams to stick to groups of 5, as well as restricting to groups of 2 when consuming F&B pre/post race.

Winds were lacklustre in the morning, causing some pre-race anxiety for both the race committee and sailors participating. Thankfully, a light south-westerly breeze filled in just 30 minutes before the start, allowing the sailors to commence their journey to Serangoon in an orderly parade.

A near perfect start from Adona gave her an early advantage over the rest of the IRC fleet. She played the light airs in her favour, defending well against the leading Jong Dee to draw first blood on corrected time. Line honours and 2nd placing is a great showing from Jong Dee, looking refreshed after making some changes post Sailing Festival. Defending Champions Waka Tere were off to a shaky start, shaking off the rust to complete the podium in 3rd.

In the PY Class, an administrative oversight from Born in Fire sees them participating in this Class for Race 1 – pitting their skills against 11 other keelboats. They emerged clear ahead of the fleet together with Invictus – engaged in a close battle on the final leg to the finish line. On corrected time, Born in Fire scored a comfortable victory over Invictus, with Atul Sinha’s Simba cruising into a confident 3rd. We also hear Simba is awaiting an IRC Certificate – that means we may have 7 IRC boats going into Race 2 of the Sunday Series on 18th July!

Kaze topped the Multihull fleet, exhibiting superior boat speed on all legs. The lack of sailing over the last 2 months seemed to have affected Miss Visayan as well, struggling with technical difficulties at the leeward mark rounding. Despite the issues at CSC 1, she managed to secure 3rd on handicap, just behind Phoenix. Freddy Fam’s M23 (Phoenix) sports a distinctive kite possibly acquired from other M23 (now retired) Baloo. As the Series develops, we do hope to see Phoenix racing more regularly!

The Beach Catamarans were led by an old-new entrant, as Jeremy Perrier returns to race in our Sunday Series. Recently taken over Ripple V, he intends to sail more regularly on the weekends, a welcome addition to the fleet. In 2nd place, we have another Jeremy (Nixon) on the podium, who interestingly enough, is sailing what was previously Mr Perrier’s Viper (Bad Influence). Just astray in 3rd was none other than Stray Catz. Nigel continues to keep the younger sailors in check, always ready to pounce when they slip up!
