Twilight Series III – Race 2 (2-up Racing)
After a successful 2-up Sunday Series Race on 3rd October, we were glad to see more boats participating in this weekend’s 2-up Twilight Race. With the Twilight Course only extending as far as Squance and Changi Buoy, it is a great race for beginners who are learning how to race. However, the day’s conditions were less than ideal. Patchy and shifty southerly winds accompanied by strong currents made it a challenging passage for some of the less experienced sailors.
In IRC Class, 4 teams participated, with Waka Tere and Born in Fire making it a very close 1-2. The latter had emerged triumphant during last week’s Sunday Series Race, but struggled in today’s conditions and did not manage to create enough distance between her and Waka Tere to eventually settle for 2nd by a mere 32 seconds on corrected time. Jong Dee claimed the 3rd spot comfortably, placing 5 minutes ahead of Minx and a close runner-up to the lead boats across the line.
Leading the PY Keelboats was the graceful Remington, which took full advantage of the off-wind conditions to stay well ahead of the rest of the fleet. Her closest rival was Balqis, who eventually faltered at the final 2 legs to place 3rd on corrected time. The J24 failed to crack the puzzle that was the wind, as she struggled to make sense of the scattered wind holes across the course. Southern Light faired slightly better, completing the race just 34 seconds ahead of Balqis. Kudos to Jen’s Jaunt, for doing well to complete the course in good time! A yacht that usually struggles to complete the course, Jen’s Jaunt performed skillfully to take 4th place, her best showing thus far.
A trio of Trimarans represented the Multihulls. Warm welcome to First Tri, whose first try at sailing the Twilight Race was not bad! Despite giving up eventually, the bright yellow weta kept close to the fleet for most of the race, a good sign that she is sailing well to her handicap. The fight for top position was between Miss Visayan and Phoenix. The former surged forward in the final leg to claim line honours. A gap of 1 minute & 16 seconds was enough for her to seal victory over the M23 on corrected time.
After a long hiatus, it was great to see the return of Damien Geoffray and Kaze. She faced stiff competition from Stray Catz, skippered by Nigel Signal and her new owner, Tim Ghinn. What better way to introduce him to club racing than with a win? The Taipan F16 took victory approx 50 seconds ahead of the Nacra 20 after corrected time. Despite Tim’s relative inexperience in racing, we are sure his enthusiasm together with Nigel’s expert tutelage will help him successfully continue the decorated legacy of Stray Catz in our Club Racing scene.
Congratulations to all the winners, we continue with more 2-up racing on 17th October. See you then!
