Sunday Series III – Race 5 (2-up Racing)

The final race club race scheduled for 2021 started with high hopes, but ended with a heavy thunderstorm, resulting in an abandoned race and complete wash-out for all participating in the Sunday Series III 2-up racing.

Although the race is stand-alone (just like all 2-up races over the last 6 weekends), many sailors were eager to race and end the season on a high, only to be prevented by a raging Sumatra system creating extremely foul weather and zero visibility for the participants. The first of many victims were the beach catamarans; taking turns to capsize when the storm hit the fleet. The drama took place in a blink of an eye, as boats broached and disappeared into a wall of white, urging the race committee to err on the side of caution and make the eventual call to abandon racing for the day.

Some sailors expressed obvious disappointment with the outcome, but it was overall still a great day out, as all participating boats returned mostly unscathed.

Sunday Series III Overall Results

Congratulations to Addiction for winning Series III with a clean sweep of all 4 available races, finishing the series with 4 points in the Beach Catamaran Class. Special mention goes to Babe, for persevering through every race this season to score a total of 13 points from 4 races – securing 2nd place. Bad Influence completed the podium just by attending Races 2 & 3, for a total of 18 points.

Please take note that because of ongoing Safe Management Measures implemented since September 2021, we will not be awarding Series result winners for all classes except for the Beach Catamaran Class (which is not affected by the restrictions).

Twilight Series III – Race 5 (2-up Racing)

Just as we received good news of the relaxation of Safe Management Measures from November 22, the final instalments of the 2-up racing culminates this weekend, a back-to-back Twilight & Sunday Series itinerary to end a rollercoaster club racing season. The weather did not cooperate, as sailors participated in a drift-a-thon to squance and back. The initial light westerly breeze after the start gave a glimmer of hope, but quickly fizzled out and settled into the familiar doldrums.

The IRC Class was the only category which managed to have more than 1 finisher, a sad reminder of the challenging conditions participants were up against for the evening. Leading the pack was the very light and nimble Jellico, helmed by Cedric Declercq. The J24 excelled in the light air, managing to stay ahead of favourites Waka Tere for most of the return leg – earning a well deserved line honours and victory on corrected time. Minx was not a distant 3rd, putting in their best efforts to keep up with the competition.

The remaining classes all had only 1 finisher each, as the rest of the fleet struggled to (unsuccessfully) complete the race.

Birregurra flaunted their striking new black sails, freshly delivered earlier this week. The Hanse 415 sailed superbly in whatever little puff there was, out-maneuvering her smaller and lighter counterparts to end up as the only PY boat to finish the course within the allotted time. Exciting to see the return of the sports boats (Petit Bateau & Jonty J), helmed by Alisdair Ferris & Tim Hartnoll respectively. Perhaps overzealous and/or rusty from the long hiatus, both boats started with the IRC fleet and failed to return to make the PY start. We certainly hope to see them more regularly in 2022!

An uncommon occurrence took place in the Multihull Class, as both owners of Kaze decided to race together on the same boat. It yielded excellent results, with Kaze being the quickest boat to complete the course. Cicak suffered a pre-start scare, as she scrambled to make the start sequence and in the process nearly nicked the Jetty. She managed a Grace-ful recovery, but eventually retired after struggling to make any progress in the still conditions.

A single Babe represented the Beach Catamaran Class, as the other catamaran owners made the (possibly sensible) decision to skip the Sad-turday Twilight. Great effort from Matt & Kellie, as their consistent attendance and never-say-die attitude resulted in a Twilight Series III win!

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, we are just glad to have yet another opportunity to be sailing over the weekend! Congratulations to all the finishers/winners.

Twilight Series III – Race 4 (2-up Racing)

After a weekend break (which was previously reserved for the Ambassadors Cup), sailors returned to Club Racing with the 4th race of the Twilight Series III. South-southwesterly breeze greeted the participants on the start line, promising consistently fluky winds throughout the course. It was however perfect tidal conditions, as the high and low tide for the day were only separated by 0.6m, making it nearly negligible for skippers when planning each leg of the race.

It was all joy and big grins on Jong Dee today! Rear Commodore (Sailing) Paul Kendall achieved a well-deserved victory at the helm of Jong Dee today, clinching line honours well ahead of the rest of the IRC fleet. She out-maneuvered close rivals Waka Tere, who had to eventually settle for 2nd. Minx kept a close eye on Born in Fire, ensuring the latter did not pull away too far ahead to clinch the final spot on the podium after corrected time.

The PY Class saw a dominant performance from Birregurra, a Hanse 415. However, Skipper Basil had to be content with a 3rd place on the podium, as she could not put enough distance between her and the chasing Remington + Marut. The S&S 42 yet again thrived in the off-wind conditions, successfully defending against the light and nimble Jeanneau Fun.

Tim-work makes the dream work! Their 2nd place finish was certainly the result of a fabulous Tim effort by the old and new skipper of Cicak, both of whom are coincidentally Tims! Under the watchful eye and tutelage of his namesake, new owner/skipper Tim Goh helmed the boat commendably, keeping Kaze in sight throughout the race. Kaze‘s victory made it 2 consecutive wins for 2-up Multihull racing in the Twilight format, well done!

In the Beach Catamaran Class, we welcome back Doug Fimmell on Madfish II. His jib-less solo performance did not disappoint, as he managed to keep up with the Nacra 20 (Kaze Kat) for the first 2 legs of the course. Subsequently, Kaze Kat managed to pull away from the fleet and score herself a win nearly 10 minutes ahead of Madfish II. Balqis II had a good day out, completing the trio of winners in a fleet of 4. Great to see that despite not placing on the podium for most races, Babe’s consistent attendance has positioned them as favourites to clinch a top 3 finish for this Series.

Sunday Series III – Race 4 (2-up Racing)

Hallo Ween, where are you?

Happy Halloween everyone! On a day associated with all creepy crawlies and other ghastly things, a heavy downpour just 10 minutes after the start washed away all hopes of completing the full course planned for the sailors. This prompted the raising of the S Flag, reducing the pennant 2 course to just 1 loop, as participants creeped and crawled across the channel in what was arguably the longest short race ever.

These conditions do tend to favour the smaller and lighter boats. Jellico performed well in the IRC Class, holding her own in the fleet of 4, claiming both line honours and the win on corrected time. She fended off late attacks from Minx and Waka Tere, but both boats failed to overtake the little J24 – settling for 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the PY Class, Marut returned to the racing scene with renewed vigour! Despite feeling under the weather (in more ways than one), Skipper Luke survived and carved out a satisfying victory on his Jeanneau Fun while having fun on the course. Remington, the surprise podium finisher was sandwiched between 2 boats under 25ft. Finishing just over a minute behind Balqis, it was enough for her to clinch 2nd on corrected time, relegating Balqis to 3rd.

Sporting a devilish grin, bright orange locks and a pair of unremarkable horns, Graham Horn sailed well to glide Jaza Too across the line in ghostly fashion. She placed ahead of Miss Visayan, trailing just 4 minutes behind. Completing the podium was last week’s winner, Kaze! Great to see others dressing up as well, I believe a skeleton was lurking somewhere on Phoenix.

Leading by a long way, Addiction was clinical at the start and finish, yet again dominating the Beach Catamaran class. She placed ahead of Tim’s Stray Catz as well as Babe in 3rd. Most notably, we understand that a new skipper was at the helm of Babe. Dissatisfied with Matt’s performance on the helm in the previous races, Kellie has now taken the reins on Babe, and did a great job completing the drift-a-thon despite the challenging conditions.
