2022 Twilight Series I – Race 3
Amidst dark skies and scattered lightning, the Twilight Series I – Race 3 kicked off to a windy start, totaling 15 boats on the start line. The storm clouds provided a dramatic backdrop, as participating boats began to heel in tandem, overpowered by the strong East-Southeasterly breeze.
Red Rum One recovered from an unimpressive Sunday Series race last week, starting well and leading the IRC fleet from start to finish. She sailed to her handicap, gradually increasing her lead over her competition to claim victory 31 seconds ahead of the chasing Jong Dee. With skipper Paul still recovering from COVID, First mate Basil stepped up and helmed the boat superbly to lead the team to a 2nd place finish, a comfortable 1 min 22 secs ahead of the J35’s little sister, Jellico. The J24 sailed 2-up and adapted well to handle the 7-9 knots winds – holding her own amongst the bigger boats in the fleet.
In the PY A Class, it was a match race between another J and a Dehler 39, as Adona and Simba crossed swords on the course while starting together with the IRC Fleet. Though 10 feet shorter, the J29 had a competent sail, outpacing the Dehler for most parts of the race. She took first place comfortably, and will look forward to continuing her good form when she switches back to IRC racing next weekend.
With 7 boats on the start line, the PY B Fleet continues to be the most well attended, and also with the most short-handed crew too! In fact, all 3 boats which took podium were sailing 2-up, what a feat! In top spot, Marut had a Fun-tastic day – beating longer and faster boats while sailing short-handed. The Jeanneau Fun sailed well to keep on top of Remington throughout the race, all the way to the finish line. The husband and wife duo onboard Olmeto was the best of the rest, as the Beneteau Oceanis 320 completed the podium in 3rd. Special commendations to the rest of the fleet – from Windflirt all the way to Sequin, your determination and perseverance was inspiring! It certainly helped that the breeze was good for most of the evening, as the strong incoming tide made it harder for cruising boats to make progress on the return leg to finish.
The Multihull and Beach Catamaran Classes had a total of 5 hulls on water – congratulations to the only participants, Miss V and Balqis II for being a good sport and representing your respective classes.
Thank you all for joining us, and Bravo Zulu to the winners. We look forward to next week’s Sunday Series I – Race 4 on 22nd May.
