2022 Twilight Series II – Race 1

Being shadowed by the land, trees and building it has often been difficult at the start line during the Southwesterly. The puffy 4 to 6 knots at the start line saw boats creeping slowly towards the line largely due to the increasing strength of the outgoing tide.

The trimarans had a rather spread out start but Bula quickly took the lead and held on to her position. Working the boat well, the crew onboard increased their lead and finish well ahead, taking 1st place followed by Ms. Visayan and Cicak in 2nd and 3rd.

Having to face the same situation with the winds and currents at the start, a few were caught way off the line when the start was signaled for the keelboats. Red Rum 1 very quickly pulled away from the fleet making use of every puff, he was closely followed by Waka and Jong Dee in the IRC class. Once cleared of the wind shadows, the 6 to 8 knots breeze allowed Red Rum to pull away from the fleet. Waka did well to maintain a close hold on Red Rum after over an hour of racing and managed to take 1st place ahead of Red Rum with Jong Dee finishing in 3rd in the IRC class, after corrected time.

In the Club Racer A division, Simba continued to sail well. Right from the start, she separated herself from the group and held onto her lead throughout the race, securing her 1st place in the division. Trailing not too far behind, Shardana and Birregurra sailed the best they could but wasn’t able to close the gap thus finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The winds were sure in favour for the S&S as Remington powered through the course and were even amongst the lead boats. With her sleek lines, and sailing mostly on a beam, she easily pulled away from the boats in her division to claim 1st in Club Racer B. Unfortunately, after the first turn, the stronger out flowing tide made sailing back to Squance a challenge for Olmeto and Brio. Both skippers took it in their stride and sailed well to complete the race in good time; Olmeto taking 2nd and Brio 3rd in Club Racer B.

2022 CSC Sunday Series II – Race 1

The winds were oscillating from the SW to SE most of the afternoon but offered a good enough condition for a gentle start. But the condition improved when the boats cleared the shadows from the trees as they passed Fairy beacon. The puffy 6 to 8 knots carried the fleet on the first leg as they sailed towards Serangoon Buoy.

It was good to have three trimarans at the start; Graham in Jaza Too and Michael in Bula must have been a definite welcome for Gary in Miss Visayan who had been the lone entry in the past races. We hope to have more Tri’s coming back to join in. Unfortunately for Jeremy, in Addiction, he was the lone entry in the beach cat class. But that did not dampen his enthusiasm for racing and enjoying the afternoon outing, he even found time to pose for the camera with his crew.

Eight boats formed the start in the keelboat division. As they cleared the end of the club’s moorings, the slight increase in wind strength saw Simba, Jong Dee, Waka Tere and Invictus pushing their way through the waters in an effort to be ahead. Following not too far behind were Marut, Remington, Balqis and Brio.

On the last leg up to Squance, Invictus took advantage of the shift in wind direction and deployed their spinnaker. Unfortunate for her, the spin halyard got snagged and they were not able to drop their spin, this led to them having to retire from the race.

With a nice sunshine and a reasonable breeze, the race ended well with Jaza Too finishing ahead of Bula in the multihull division and Addiction in the beach catamaran. Atul in Simba did well in IRC and finished ahead of Paul in Jong Dee. Zaheera in Balqis was first in the CHN-A and coming in first and second in the CHN-B were Remington and Marut.
