CSC Optimist Championships 2022 (Gold) Day 1

Having experienced wet weather, unpredictable and light wind conditions during the Silver Fleet Championships last week, some volunteers and race officials were less-than-optimistic; not getting their hopes up for this week’s CSC Optimist Championships 2022 (Gold). A total of 70 participants registered for this event, with a few sailors absent due to overseas competitions and year-end holidays. Despite the smaller numbers, the competition remains tight, with the addition of 7 friends from Hebe Haven Yacht Club – a newly established affiliate of Changi Sailing Club from Hong Kong!

The winds arrived on time, with a gentle North-Easterly breeze greeting sailors on the start line for Race 1. Ethan Lee (4416) claimed the first bullet for the series, after successfully defending a late surge from Ella Ong (3183) on the final reach to finish. Ella was however the more consistent of the 2 over today’s 2 races – scoring a 4th in Race 2 to end Day 1 just 1 point ahead of Ethan. Despite winning Race 2, a 14th placing in Race 1 left Isaac Poon (3104) playing catch-up in 5th overall. More races could not be conducted due to bad weather and poor visibility, forcing the Race Officer to put up an AP over A signal at 1530hrs.

Sailors in the top 30 have everything to play for over the remaining days, as a large number of sailors have placed well in one of the two races conducted. On the home front, Lyric Li (728) is currently positioned 7th and leading the contingent, after a strong result in Race 1. Ikuto (712), Sam (727) and Tiago (719) and Heng Yi (755) all registered commendable results, placing overall 17th, 21st, 30th and 32nd respectively. Although all sailors have graduated and continued to pursue their sailing endeavours at other institutions, the Club is extremely proud of their achievements!

We look forward to more NE winds over the next 3 days – fair winds to all!
