Sunday Series II 2023 Finale (Race 5)

The weather continued to tease us on Sunday, with an incessant drizzle dampening the mood in the morning. This was speckled with bits of breeze across the channel, but nothing stable enough for a decent race. Thankfully the sky cleared up from noon, and winds picked up from a south-westerly direction – a clear signal to sailors that racing would commence on schedule. Race Organizers planned a pennant 4 course, lining the boats up for an exciting downwind start.

In the Multihull Class, Miss Visayan and Bula returned to cross swords for the final race of the series – winner takes all. Both boats did not disappoint, as they took turns to take the lead, neck and neck for the entire duration of the race. In what was one of the best photo finishes of 2023, Miss Visayan edged ahead of Bula by mere inches across the line, sealing victory for Race 5 and overall Sunday Series II.

All the main contenders were in attendance for Race 5 in the PY Class, setting the stage for a thrilling finale. Brio, Jock, Remington, Waka Tere, Birregurra and Olmeto were all within reach of a podium finish, pending a good result from Race 5. Despite entering this race in pole position, in addition to a strong result (3rd), Brio narrowly missed out on the Series victory by 1 point, surrendering the PY title to Waka Tere. Kurt and team sailed well to secure line honours and a 2nd place on corrected time, thus completing Series II with 10 points to top the fleet. Jock continues to impress with a bullet in Race 5, punching above her weight to claim 3rd in the series just 1 point behind Brio. Honorable mentions for Birregurra, Remington and Olmeto, all worthy contenders – placing 4th, 5th and 6th respectively in the overall Series.

The IRC fleet was well represented, with 5 boats on the start line. Adona sailed a superb race, claiming an early lead before extending it further to cross the line in first place comfortably. It was however not to be, as Jellico finished just over 6 minutes behind, a sufficient effort to jump above the larger J on corrected time. Born in Fire did not display her best performance on Sunday, but managed to successfully defend her position against close rivals Minx and Jong Dee to claim 3rd on the podium. In the overall Series, Minx had done enough to secure victory with 10 points, being the most consistent team throughout the series. Tied on 12 points, Born in Fire’s 2 bullets from Races 1 & 2 came to the rescue, breaking the tie with Adona to claim 2nd overall. Honorable mentions for Jong Dee, Jellico and Red Rum One, completing the series in 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.

Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you everyone for participating every weekend! See you this Friday for Members Night and on 1st October for our Oktoberfest-themed Family Day BBQ.
