Sunday Series III 2023 (Race 1)

After a week’s break, CSC resumes Club racing activities with the Sunday Series III, commencing the series with a rare pennant 8 course – providing a convenient warmup for next month’s 22nd Ambassadors’ Cup. Winds blew consistently from a southeasterly direction, setting a near-perfect windward-leeward course for the 12 boats participating.

In the IRC class, all eyes were on Adona after the start, as she took advantage of a good start to establish an early lead in the race. She was pushed hard on the upwind by the X99, but Born in Fire could not maintain the heat on the downwind leg due to the costly error of having forgotten to bring the spinnaker for the race. Despite a late start, Minx quickly settled into a groove, sailing a superb downwind leg to close the gap between her and the J29. She takes 2nd place a distant 6 minutes behind – a result she will be looking to better in the upcoming races.

The largest fleet was attended by the same PY boats which took part in the final race of Series II, great to see a 100% return for Series III! Waka took an early lead, stretching the distance on the upwind leg before making the best of her asymmetrical set-up for the downwind leg to finish. She did enough to score a 3rd on corrected time, edged out by Jock and Brio in 1st and 2nd respectively. A fantastic result for Race 1 from the top 2 contenders – we can’t wait to see more exciting action from the PY Class!

The usual suspects Bula and Miss Visayan had a returning friend on water this series, as a trio of trimarans graced the start line for the Multihulls. Ragnarok resumes racing this year in Series III, and has also registered her participation in the Ambassadors’ Cup next month. Great to see her keeping Miss Visayan on her toes, as she tracked her course throughout most of the downwind leg. At the top, Bula claims the first bullet for the series, having led for most of the race to cross the line by a comfortable 4 minutes ahead of Miss Visayan.

A worthy start to the last Series for the year, congratulations to all winners! We look forward to commencing Series III for Twilight on 14 October.
