Sunday Series III 2023 (Finale)

Following the successful conclusion of the 2023 Twilight Series on Saturday, the fleet quickly transited to the final race for the Sunday Series on the following day. Comprising of Series I, II & III, a total of 15 races were conducted over March – December 2023, with 10th December being the 15th and final race to bring the competition to a close. Blessed with a Northerly breeze, sailors were treated to a pleasant sail on course 4, taking participants to Tekong Buoy and back.

Despite a late start, the sole representative from the Beach Catamaran Class managed to claw her way back to the top of the fleet, finishing amongst the Multihulls and IRC Keelboats. Addiction’s win in Race 5 was the only race she participated in for Series III. We are however certain that she will return for the NE Monsoon Sailing Festival in 2024. The fleet’s absence was felt, as the poor attendance for the Series and the year meant that none of the teams will be awarded the Sunday Series Challenge Trophy for 2023. We hope to see a rejuvenated fleet next year!

In the Multihull Class, we return for Round 2 of the Bula – Miss Visayan match-up. Neck and neck for most of the race, Bula overtook Miss Visayan at the windward mark rounding, and a costly technical error near Changi Beach snuffed out any hopes of Miss Visayan overtaking her smaller rival. The Corsair Dash’s win was unfortunately not enough to get pass Miss V in the Series and overall 2023 standings, claiming 2nd place in both by 2 points. Gary Curtis and crew were all smiles, having secured the double – taking home both the Twilight and Sunday Series Challenge Trophies for the Multihull Class. Bravo Zulu to newcomer Dot Dot Dot, as her consistency and persistence paid off – awarding her with 3rd in Series III and 3rd overall for the year.

The largest fleet no doubt, and arguably the most competitive fleet (some would suggest), the PY Class was represented by 5 boats on water this Sunday. All the main characters have come out to play, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion. Starting from the top, Waka Tere again showed dominant form on the course, successfully deciphering the conditions around Tekong Buoy and stretching her lead to claim line honours and a comfortable victory in the PY Class. She was chased by Remington and Brio, completing the podium in 2nd and 3rd respectively on corrected time. The S & S 42 displayed a rare kite hoist, much to our photographer’s delight. Skipper Paul Sneesby must be pleased with the team’s 2nd place finish in the Series and 3rd overall for 2023, following a successful Twilight campaign. Waka Tere took 3rd in Series III, a commendable outcome despite missing out on Race 4.

Despite their 5th placing in Race 5, Jock her performed well enough to secure 2nd overall in the Sunday Series Leaderboard for 2023. However, the biggest success was undeniably Brio – as her consistently good performance throughout the year was reflected in her results: awarding the team with the title of champions for Sunday Series III and the overall Sunday Series 2023 Challenge Trophy.

Represented by a much smaller fleet, the IRC Keelboat Class consists of only 3 participating boats on the start line. Despite the numbers, it was a thrilling trio and a joy to watch the clean manoevres on water. The tiny J24 topped the fleet, scoring another bullet for Series III to finish the event with an impressive 6 points. Her performance was bested only by Adona, whose 2nd place finish for Race 5 was sufficient to consolidate her position in the top spot with 5 points. Rounding off the winners would be the mellowed Minx, following her recent success in the Twilight Series. In the overall standings, Adona claimed the overal Sunday Series Challenge Trophy for 2023, accumulating 27 points over 15 races. Minx’s efforts were recognized – 31 points from 15 races placed her in 2nd – her better attendance record successfully defended against a strong but late performance from Cedric’s Jellico, finishing 3rd with 45 points.

Congratulations to all the winners and a big thank you to all 31 boats registered for this year’s Sunday Series. Enjoy the holidays and see you on 31 Dec for the NYE Twilight Race.
