CSC Sunday Series I (Race 2)

Another day in paradise. With the UV index hitting extreme highs in recent weeks, the unexpected North-Easterly blow was a much welcomed relief for the sailors. The fleet was represented by a modest mix of 7 keelboats and 3 multihulls, with a number of the regulars taking a break from the intense NE Monsoon season, or maybe just avoiding the brutal heat.

Birregurra and Miss Visayan had recently returned from the picturesque Bintan, Indonesia, spending the easter weekend sailing in the 2nd Bintan Regatta. Their experience seemed to shine through, as both boats won their respective classes quite comfortably. The Corsair 28 was up against fierce rivals Bula and the Dragonfly 25, Enter the Dragon. Apart from a near-miss at the notorious chek jawa sandbar, Miss Visayan looked comfortable on the course, creating a substantial lead on the chasing pair, eventually crossing the line in first place. Bula was the best of the rest, claiming the remaining spot on the podium.

In the Keelboat PY Class, Birregurra lapped up the day’s wind conditions, putting on a display of pure boat speed right off the start, going toe-to-toe with the IRC Class’s fastest boat, Red Rum One. The Hanse 415 performed well to stay ahead of more decorated rivals Waka Tere and Forever Young, scoring a bullet for Race 2. The Young 84’s full crew may have been the edge they needed, as she secured 2nd place by a slim margin ahead of Waka Tere’s familiar 2-up combination of Kurt & Gill. Despite Jock’s best efforts, the lack of a spinnaker on the downwind leg and errors on the upwind leg proved too large a deficit to overcome, settling for 4th overall.

The Keelboat IRC Class was represented by Adona, Red Rum One and Jong Dee. The smallest of the three also proved to be the fastest, as she breezed through the course in clinical fashion, producing a very convincing victory on corrected time. The battle between the Archambault 40 and the J35 was however much closer, with the latter clinching 2nd place by a mere 3 seconds on handicap. What a thrilling result for both boats.

It seems the heat is here to stay – keep cool and go sailing!
