CSC Twilight Series II 2024 (Race 1)

Amidst the recent oil spill recovery and reinstatement efforts along the southern coast of Singapore, we are reminded not to take our coastline and water space for granted. CSC is fortunate to continue our sailing activities and programmes with minimal disruptions, and one such activity is our fortnightly Twilight Series. Despite this being the weekend before the RSYC Regatta, we commenced Series II with a healthy attendance of 15 boats across 3 classes, thankfully paired with some decent southerly breeze.

The IRC Class was represented by Red Rum One, Jong Dee, Adona and Simba. With the absence of her owner, Adona was skippered and crewed by the dynamic duo of Luke and Claire. The J29 gave it a good shot, and fared well against her larger rivals, successfully pipping Jong Dee by a mere 6 seconds at the finish line! When the numbers were crunched, she secured a 2nd on the podium, also just nudging down Steve Manning’s Red Rum One. The Archambault 40 was leading from start to finish, but struggled to put the distance on the fleet in the occasionally patchy wind conditions. Simba emerged the best of the four, claiming the first bullet for the series. Skipper Atul’s intense travelling plans for the next 2 months may mean a challenging outlook for the rest of the season.

Boasting 8 boats on the course, the PY Class showcases a diverse range of boats and sailors. New entrant Alyssa Lim and Jakub Kogut signed up for 2 months of fun, entering a GK24 and Maxi Fenix respectively for Series II. The former was formerly a national dinghy sailor, and her performance was nothing short of impressive. Slingshot held her own amongst larger and quicker boats in the fleet, and Alyssa did it single-handed, no less. Her victory was well deserved, and served as the perfect birthday present for the young skipper. Birregurra was a content bridesmaid, scoring 2nd place on corrected time, making it two successful runner-up results in consecutive weekends. Completing the podium would be the way-wise Waka Tere, who survived engine issues prior to the race, and managed to safely completed the race on a positive note. Special mention goes out to Summer Breeze, for successfully attempting their first Twilight Race! Lets not forget that the PY fleet is all about encouraging participation, and we hope to see Jakub and crew return for more.

Miss Visayan and Bula return for another episode of exciting rivalry, this time joined by the eye-catching Sirius Swift. Bula could not replicate her performance from last week, and were left playing catch up on the Twilight course. Gary and team successful redeemed themselves in what looked like a fairly comfortable race for Miss Visayan. Despite missing out on a podium position, the Corsair 880 certainly displayed moments of brilliance – and we look forward to closer competition in Race 2.

We resume racing for the Twilight and Sunday Series on 27 and 28 July respectively.
