Twilight Series I 2025 - Race 1 | Changi Sailing Club

The recent monsoon surge brought the temperature below 25 degrees, allowing for a cooling afternoon of racing with overcast skies in the first race of the season – Twilight Series I, Race 1. After a possibly overwhelming and incredibly successful Sailing Festival in the past 8 weeks, sailors resume the more casual and laidback Twilight / Sunday Series regime, promising only 1 race a day – perfect for the weekend warriors. However the lack of weekends available meant that we had to start the season with a back-to-back Twilight and Sunday Series weekend, therefore preparations are underway for today’s Sunday Series I, Race 1.

The IRC fleet was represented by a trio of fast performance cruisers: Shardana, Jong Dee and Simba. The Dehler 39 returned to racing after a long break, and did not look too rusty on the course. Skipper Atul welcomed two new sailors from the NUS seafarers programme, and both looked like they had a great first-time racing experience! Similarly, Shardana had a number of first-time keelboat sailors racing aboard, all of them under 18. The Dufour 34 was prudent on the course, making a wise decision to reef the sails before the start to accommodate the heavier winds and lighter crew. The fastest boat in the fleet for the afternoon was Jong Dee! The J35 did not have the best start, but managed to take the lead shortly after – extending the distance sufficiently to win comfortably on corrected time. The fight for 2nd place was much closer, with only 53 second separating Simba (2nd) from Shardana (3rd).

In the PY Class, we find more boats taking the cautious approach, as we noticed the shorthanded Sapphire Star and Skybird both put in a reef in anticipation of higher winds. Skybird’s experienced duo of Luke and Claire made the perfect team to host and teach the NUS seafarers newbies onboard. At the other end of the fleet, Birregurra showed great form, and were right up there with the slippery IMP. This David vs Goliath scenario was however short-lived, as IMP popped her asymmetrical on the downwind, effectively disqualifying her from the “white-sails only” race. When the numbers were crunched, Birregurra’s line honours could only muster a second place on corrected time, losing by mere seconds to the unassuming yet nimble duo of Ben and Lucas on Nevis. Completing the podium finishers were the jubilant Jockstars, led by Shuju Lan in Suzanne’s absence.

The trio of Sirius Swift, Miss Visayan and Bula made up the Multihull fleet, and Miss Visayan commenced the club campaign with a convincing victory over Bula and Sirius Swift. The two corsairs were definitely worthy challengers, as Bula crossed just a minute behind, and Sirius Swift coming in shortly after. The Corsair 880 looked sharper on the water with ex-national sailor Darrell on the helm, but have more work to do if they were to mount a serious challenge for top spot.
