Monthly Dinghy Race (Race 3) - 25 May

Changi Sailing Club held it’s monthly dinghy race every last Sunday of the month welcoming sailors of all experience levels for a lively and competitive day on the water. With a steady 5 to 7 knots of breeze coming from the Northeast, conditions were near-perfect for racing.

A fleet of 29 boats launched just after 2.00pm, with a mix of classes including ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and Optimist. The race committee set a windward-leeward course for Optimist and sausage-triangle for ILCA ensuring a good test of upwind technique and downwind speed.

From the outset, it was clear the competition would be tight. A clean start for everyone in a do or die one (1) race! Ikuto Mori (1st), Amandine Pitsilis (2) & Misa Lim Laurie (3) took the podium spots in the ILCA 4 division. In ILCA 6 division, Maia Laurie Lim, Jaydn Wilkins and our guest sailor Sam Tan-Hardy were announced winners.

In the Open Division, after a gybe while approaching to the finish line, Jaydn Wilkins was on the lead, unfortunately, for some reason he’s boat go stalled, lost speed and Maia Lim Laurie took line honours, followed by Jaydn in second and Ikuto rounding out the podium. On corrected time under handicap, Ikuto Mori claimed victory, highlighting the competitive balance across different dinghy types.

Sailors in the Optimist junior division (Charlie) as young as 9 years competing in the monthly dinghy race, Mikayla Wong took the 1st place, followed by Khalisha Mohamed in the 2nd place and her younger sister, Afiya Mohamed seated comfortably in 3rd place. In the much older division, Scott Goh took the first place in the Bravo squad, joining him in the podium: Morris Beugel in 2nd place and Elouan Gay, recently joined the squad showed a strong performance in securing the 3rd spot.

While waiting for the race 2 to commence, a gusty wind from the storm clouds opened and shook things up, with a few near-capsizes and quick recoveries adding to the excitement. Unfortunately, the Race Committee and coaches made a decision to stop the race due to safety issue forcing the team to head back to shore and proceed to award the winners.

A big thank you goes out to the race committee, parent-volunteers, coaches and CSC staff who made the event smooth and safe. Congratulations to all participants — whether you were battling at the front or mastering your first race, your spirit made the day a success!
