CSC Keelboat One-Design Championships 2025 - Day 1

The annual CSC Keelboat One-Design Championships returns in its latest form this weekend – with 11 of the best J24 and Platu teams from across Singapore congregating in the East Johor Straits for a weekend of thrilling windward-leeward races. We welcome back our friends from SMU Sailing Club, NTU Sailing Club as well as Republic of Singapore Yacht Club to compete in our waters, many of whom are already familiar with our sailing grounds. Defending J24 Champions Jellico managed to fix their mast in time for this regatta, much to Skipper Cedric’s relief. She will cross swords with the RSYC contingent, Suzanne’s Jockstars, SMUSC’s Quarterdeck and new entrants Jangan Main Main (JMM) – a star-studded team led by CSC Youth Member, Wonn Kye. In the Platu Class, SMUmad will face the uphill task of defending their title in the absence of their coach, XYZ. She faces strong competition from sister ship SMUve, CSC representatives Boreas (Forever Young-er) and Notus (NTU Sailing).

Day 1 of racing saw plenty of wind shifts on the course, that, coupled with deciphering the tidal situation, and avoiding a consistent flow of inbound and outbound vessels, kept the team tacticians on their toes throughout the afternoon. Despite the challenges, the Race Committee managed to successfully lock in 4 races for the J24s and 3 races for the Platus.

JMM, or “Don’t Play Play” is a common expression in Singlish, a blend of English and other languages spoken in Singapore, that means “don’t mess around” or “be serious”. She’s definitely a serious contender, surprising the usual suspects and leading the J24 fleet at the end of Day 1. Her bullets from Races 1 and 4 together with a consistent podium finish in-between helped place her just 2 points ahead of defending champs, Jellico. With 2 races to go, we can expect both teams to go all out to claim victories on Day 2. The fight for 3rd place is shaping up to be equally competitive, with the three RSYC teams neck and neck on points. RSYC Empat currently has a slight edge, but things may change once the discard comes into play.

While a significantly smaller fleet, the competition is no less intense in the Platu Class, with onlya point separating the top three boats after Day 1. Winning Race 1 and placing 2nd in Races 2 and 3, Notus leads the pack with 5 points, under the skilful helmsmanship of Darrel Lim. SMUve and SMUmad share a bullet each, and will be looking to dethrone Notus with the remaining 3 races today. Poor starts in all three races left Boreas trailing the fleet for most of the afternoon. Struggling to adjust to a different boat, the mostly Forever Young crew led by Skipper Jasper are certainly improving with every race, and we look forward to a rejuvenated team on Day 2!
