Where Have All the Sailors Gone?

The second race of the Sunday Series II saw a significant drop in participation, with only seven boats racing across three classes. Despite the small fleet, the racing was exciting and blessed with amazing conditions — a steady southerly breeze carried the sailors on a Pennant 4 course to Tekong Buoy and back.

The largest fleet was a trio of trimarans, led by Miss Visayan at the start and throughout the downwind leg to Tekong Buoy. Bula, however, made things interesting on the upwind beat to CAAS 2, gradually closing the gap and eventually overtaking the Corsair F28. The smaller and nimbler Dash 750 then held the lead for the remainder of the course to Squance and the finish line — making it two wins from two races. Miss Visayan crossed just 18 seconds behind to claim second place in a tight finish, while Oojoo, after last week’s dramatic Twilight showdown, had a more relaxed sail and comfortably secured third place.

In the IRC Class, the combined sailing experience of over 150 years across the three crew aboard Adona helped the J29 make light work of the course, finishing in 1.5 hours — just a minute ahead of the chasing Waka Tere from the PY Class. The Nelson 10m performed superbly, stretching her lead over the only other PY keelboat, Birregurra, to claim both line honours and the win on corrected time. Despite valiant efforts, Jong Dee and Birregurra had to settle for second place in their respective classes.

Perhaps sailors were busy preparing for next week’s RSYC Regatta — or maybe just away on holiday. With a long break from Club racing beginning today, we’ll resume with Twilight Series II Race 2 on 23rd August.
