CSC Sunday Series III – Race 5

The weather looked great from the early hours of Sunday and it held for the finals of the Sunday Series III and the Leader Board Challenge. Just like the day before the weather was extremely favourable for the closing race of the season.

The same shifting winds from the Northwest to the Northeast had the race management team throwing their dice to decide on whether to start to the West or to the East of the start line. Knowing that the outgoing tides would have a big effect, the stronger winds helped decide on course 4. A decision well appreciated by many.

The same three trimarans charged through the starting line at good speeds with Kaze leading the pack. She was closely followed by Dot Dot Dot and Ms Visayan. Sailing just off the winds, and with the outgoing tides pushing along, it was quite a sight to see these boats cutting through the waters at such amazing speeds.

The 7 keelboats also put-up a good showing at the start line. Adona showed her mastery at the start line with a picture-perfect performance crossing the line at the gun. Like a pack of hounds chasing the hare, Remington, Waka Tere, Jellico, Southern Light and Jong Dee (not in the packing order) were just a split seconds behind. The pack was so tightly bunched up that there was a definite overlap between all boats. Jock was a little more cautious but was also only a few boat lengths behind. It was truly a beautiful starting show.

By then, the outgoing tide was pushing at its strongest and with the winds slowing at the turning mark, it became an uphill task for those arriving later at Tekong Buoy. Realising that it would be a long slog to the mark, Southern Light and Jock took the graceful decision to retire from the race. And I believe that their decision was for not wanting to drag on the day for everyone.

Another beautiful day of sailing and definitely a great way to end the season.
