6th CSC ILCA & 29ER (Day 1)

Day 1 of CSC ILCA & 29er 6th edition welcome 70 boats split into 3 classes: 51 ILCA 4, 16 ILCA 6 and 3 29er.

The day started with slow and elusive Northeasterly wind direction coming in with strong tide , series of puffs and lulls, shifty wind directions gave the Race Management team a challenging job to set up the course. With more than an hour of waiting for some luck, a drastic and unexpected fresh Southeasterly wind came filling in the course area. The team swiftly shifted the course configuration, rushing to catch the pressure while it lasts. Finally, first warning signal sound was heard at 1408hrs that signaled the fleet to get ready, all set to go!

With current and wind direction coming from the same direction, the port lay line was an obvious option to go, sailors dashed to get the gusts on the left hand side of the course, patiently waiting to receive gusts that would bring them up to the top mark. It pays off to be patient and focusing on their boat speed, a skill that requires tons of concentration rather than on tactical aspects. Despite the  better wind condition and strength between 7 to 8kts it didn’t settled in one direction, an oscillating wind from 090 to 140 degrees made it more competitive and exciting for the sailors who will get the shifts first, a risk that they have to endure and deal with. After 3 races, leaderboard results finally published.

In ILCA 4 Division, top sailor Ian Goh (SGP 222713) finished day 1 with 2 bullets and 2 points away from Optimist best sailor turned to ILCA Ethan Chia (SGP 228368) with 7 points in total enough to secure 2nd place. Mika Tew (SGP 227461) managed to finish in 3rd place with a big lead from the fleet. Changi Sailing Club’s best performing sailors, strong finished in the top 20 overall results; Kate Yeh (SGP 221437) 11th, Lukas Kiesselbach (GER 221597) 17th & Reyes Tan Jit Eng (SGP 214251) 20th.  Misa Lim Laurie (USA 223202)  leading the 13yrs old and under category, joining her in the podium Charles Kong (SGP 2276776) currently on 3rd place.

For the ILCA 6, Ikuto Mori (GBR 219178) is back! A home coming regatta for him, took the 1st spot with tied points with Eitan Oh (SGP 224717). We expect a thrilling defense and offense strategies from these 2 good sailors. Not far behind from them, Austin Yeo (2) waiting for a chance to sneak in between them to break the tie points and will reshuffle the result board. In the female category, CSC sailor Maia Lim Laurie (USA 223201) conservatively raced with shifts and gusts on her favor to put her on 1st spot in her division against good contenders Sarah Yong (SGP 221689) in 2nd place and Cleo Seah En Rui (SGP 224379).

Meanwhile, in the fast and furious 29er category, with only 1 point away from each other, 1st place goes to sail number SGP 2472 skippered by Sean Kum with a total of 5 points, 2nd place SGP 2869 skippered by Cheryl Ho, took the middle spot and SGP 2466, Cheryl Yong will come back and let’s see if the results will change in day 2.

We look forward to a better and consistent wind condition for a fair and easy sailing in day 2 of this weekend’s racing. Will this shake up the result leaderboard? Let’s Go!
