CSC Sunday Series I 2026 - Race 5 (Final)

After a light-air Twilight slog, we rolled straight into the final race of the Sunday Series — this time facing a very different challenge. Right before the start, several weather systems loomed around CSC, once again leaving the Race Committee with the difficult task of deciding on a suitable course for the day. A cautious approach was eventually taken, sending all 11 boats on a three-loop course around Changi Buoy and CSC 1.

What began as a gentle southerly breeze soon transformed into a full-blown storm, blanketing the East Johor Straits with a heavy downpour and gusts of up to 25 knots.

The only fleet to escape the worst of the squall were the trio of multihulls. A quick completion of the course gave them enough time to return safely to their moorings, with Miss Visayan once again leading the fleet to victory. Her win, however, was not enough to dethrone Bula in the overall series standings, as Michael Flecker & co. had already secured three bullets, ending the series as overall winners on 5 points. David Steel’s Dot Dot Dot struggled to replicate her Race 1 form, eventually settling for third overall with 10 points from four races.

The poor visibility and intense weather rattled a few crews, and unsurprisingly, some sailors made the wise decision to return to safety early, effectively retiring from the race. Good effort to SMUMad, Jock, and Remington for giving it a go in challenging conditions.

Waka Tere, the fastest boat in the PY fleet, just managed to stay ahead of the foul weather, claiming line honours and second place on corrected time. She left the remaining two teams in the Keelboat PY Class to switch into survival mode and battle the elements to the finish. Of the two, RSYC Lima emerged victorious, securing both the handicap win and overall PY Class triumph. Skybird completed the podium in third, though not without a fair bit of sail flogging and unnecessary adrenaline.

The overall standings ultimately reflected the Race 5 results. RSYC Lima claimed the series win, finishing one point ahead of Waka Tere (7 points to 8). Skybird followed in third on 12 points after one discard, narrowly edging out Team Jock by a single point.

In the IRC Class, Bound To Please handled the squall admirably, taking the rough conditions in stride and navigating through poor visibility to complete the race strongly. Her lead over Koru, however, proved insufficient to secure the bullet, and she settled for second in the race. SMUMad, prioritising safety with several inexperienced sailors onboard, understandably chose to retire early. Nevertheless, their efforts throughout the series were recognised and proved enough to earn a well-deserved second overall, breaking a tie with Bound To Please thanks to their bullet in Race 3.

The visibly absent Jellico had already done enough to secure the Sunday Series I title, having claimed bullets in Races 1, 2, and 4 to finish on 5 points after discard.

Congratulations to all competitors for surviving an exciting and testing day on the water! It has been a fantastic series, and we now turn our attention to next week’s Keelboat One-Design Championships, followed by the Tioman Regatta in June.
