Sunday Series II – Finale

2nd September 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The Sunday Series II Finale sees a whooping total of 17 boats taking part, bringing the fortnightly racing series to an exciting close. This was despite the light air and strong currents, providing yet another challenging test of perseverance and tactics throughout the pennant 4 course.

Series leaders Invictus led the fleet from start to finish – securing the IRC Title with another bullet. They make amends for their DSQ during Saturday’s Twilight Finale, displaying a dominant performance for the 5th race of the Sunday Series II. Yesterday’s results were also the exact reflection of the Overall IRC Series results, with Jong Dee and Shardana claiming 2nd and 3rd respectively.

In the PY Class, Sangaree returns from a triumphant Western Circuit campaign to secure line honours ahead of the rest of the fleet, but only manages 4th after handicap correction. Southern Light kept close to the leaders to earn her a well-deserved bullet, finishing the Series on a high. 2nd place went to the Lucas Van Maarschalkerweerd’s Minx, staying just ahead of 3rd placed Olmeto. Southern Light’s win could only muster an overall 4th placing in the Series, 1 point behind Olmeto, whose 3 points yesterday contributed to their 3rd in the overall standings with 13 points. A bullet and consistent performances from Minx earned them a 2nd for the Series, this following their overall 3rd in the Twilight Series II. Despite finishing a dismal 5th in the fleet for the last race of the Series, New Blue Eyes did enough to secure a weekend Club Series double and the PY Title on 7 points.

Shaun Norris’s Witblits had a similar outcome in the Cruising Multihull Class, recording their worst result for the series yesterday, but had already secured the Cruising Multihull Title with 4 bullets from Race 1 to 4. Kaze’s return to club racing reward them with a bullet, serving as clear indication that they’re back in contention for subsequent club series! Consistency is the key factor to Eepai’s well-deserved 2nd in the race and 2nd overall, notching top 3 finishes for all the races she participated in. Baloo’s strong attendance in the Series gave them the right to be on the podium in 3rd, completing the Series on 14 points – 5 points adrift of Eepai.

Despite a no-show from the Beach Catamarans yesterday, we’d like to congratulate Uli Braun and his Nacra 15 for winning the Sunday Series II Title with 2 bullets. Doug Fimmell’s Madfish II sits pretty 2 points away on 2nd place and another Viper, Jeremy Nixon’s Bad Influence, took 3rd on 21 points.

Congratulations all winners, thank you for another great Sunday Series turn-out! We will be taking a break from racing next week, Sunday Series III race 1 commences on 16th September, 2pm. See you there!

Sunday Series II – Race 4

19th August 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

We had a small turn out at this weekend?s race as most of our regular sailors were at the Western Circuit but it was a perfect day for a round Ubin race.

At the start, the steady South Easterly breeze brought the fleet to the first mark and up to TKPK in very quick time. The winds and its direction seemed to have favoured the cats as both Stray Catz and Madfish II led the charge as the zoomed through the channel between Ubin and the Johor coast line. Bab Influence wasn?t too far behind as the three beach catamarans made their way to the Eastern corner of Ubin. Doug in Madfish II was trailing Nigel on the northern side of Ubin but managed to creep past Nigel as they made their way back to the club. The three cats continued in that order and finished the race with Madfish II crossing the line first followed by Stray Catz and Bad Influence in third; making it an average one-and-a-half-hour race for the three boats.

Stefan in Firefly started the race well but turned back shortly due to some technical problems; never fly budget. The cruising multi-hull fleet had a good showing of 4 tris with Firefly making it a 5-boat start. Shaun Norris in Witblitz sailed the race well finishing in 1hr 22min 53sec, corrected time followed by Michael Chia in Eepai, Tim Hill in Cicak and Chris and Dave finishing in the respective order. As the fleet of tris and keelboats made their way towards Serangoon Buoy, the wind picked up, bringing rain onto them.

The increase in wind force created some excitement for the tris and the three keelboats. Churning up bow sprays as they made their way upwind. The winds were strong enough to have both Invictus and Jong Dee spilling their mains as they made their way towards Serangoon. Invictus?s 7-minute lead on elapse time allowed him to keep his 1st placing after corrected over Jong Dee in the IRC division. New Blue Eyes, the lone wolf in the PY division had his share of fun sailing round the course, we hope to see more PY boats in next week?s Twilight race.

Sunday Series II – Race 3

29th July 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

Sunday Series II racing yesterday made it an exciting weekend for some of the boats, with broaches, botched spinnaker hoist/drop and last-minute overtaking maneuvers taking place all over the BC5 Course. With the winds building nicely in the afternoon, the pennant 7 course was an easy decision to make, sending sailors north of Tekong on a long passage around the BC5 Buoy and back.

Invictus returns from a successful RSYC Regatta campaign, finishing 2nd in their class over the 3 days of racing. Alas, it was a repeat result yesterday as they could not capitalize on Jong Dee’s unintended spinnaker washing, settling for 2nd. Jong Dee recovered well from the mistake, scoring another bullet for the Series in the IRC class.

The biggest fleet on Sunday was undoubtly the PY Class, with 7 yachts participating. Another close fight in the top 4, Minx emerged triumphant – beating close rivals New Blue Eyes and Olmeto in 3rd and 2nd respectively. Despite taking line honours in the PY class, Temptress of Down missed out on podium by seconds to New Blue Eyes – ending the day with a hard-fought 4th.

A close encounter between Firefly and one of the trimarans at the start line made things interesting for the Cruising Multihull Class. It was business as usual for Witblits, taking victory over Baloo and Eepai in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Line honours and a good lead over Eepai for Baloo gave them a well-deserved 2nd, this comes after missing out narrowly on podium for the past 2 weekends.

Uli Braun and Bryan Ngu partnered to sail the Nacra 15 to a nail-biting victory in the Beach Catamaran Class. Madfish II fell victims to a massive wind-hole on the last 100 metres to the finish line, allowing the Nacra 15 and Bad Influence to sneak in and finish ahead of them from the leeward side.

Congratulations to all the winners, see you next week for Race 3 of our Twilight Series II!

Sunday Series II – Race 2

15th July 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

With the RSYC Regatta commencing on Saturday next week, we had a smaller fleet of boats participating in yesterday’s Sunday Series II. Despite the small numbers, competition was close – with some exciting action taking place on water.

In the IRC Class, a near-collision scare with Wild Card did little to slow Jong Dee down, clinching a bullet ahead of Invictus. Reaching a speed of over 8 knots – Southern Light thrived in Sunday’s wind conditions, fending off stiff competition from the rest of the PY fleet to finish in 1st place after corrected time. New Blue Eyes continue to sail well to complete the race in 2nd, and Wild Card edged out Olmeto by seconds to claim 3rd.

Baloo’s speed for the race yesterday was phenomenal, finishing a fair distance ahead of the other 2 trimarans competing. Unfortunately, that performance was not enough for Baloo to earn a spot on the podium, also missing out by seconds. It was Witblit’s victory in the Cruising Multihull Class, followed by Eepai in 2nd place. Despite being the only beach catamaran that finished, Uli Braun’s Nacra 15 had loads of exhilarating fun, lapping up the strong winds and taking her to extraordinary speeds.

Congratulations to all the winners and good luck to all CSC sailors participating in next weekend’s RSYC Regatta!

Sunday Series II – Race 1

2nd July 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

We kicked off the 2nd season of our Sunday Series racing yesterday in very challenging conditions. There was not enough wind to start the race on time at 2pm – as race organisers delayed the flag-off for about 45mins. The light easterly breeze prompted the hoisting of course flag pennant one, taking yachts on a 3-loop course between Changi Buoy and CSC 1.

Champions from the last Twilight Series, Invictus started their Sunday Series II campaign in the IRC Class on a good note, drawing first blood by clinching the bullet ahead of rivals Red Rum and Shardana. Despite taking line honours, Red Rum lost out by 2 seconds after corrected time to Shardana to settle for 3rd on the podium.

In the PY Class, New Blueyes took 1st position in a fleet of 7 boats by a slim margin of 4 seconds – ahead of close rivals Balqis. Fresh from their successful campaign at CSC@Besar Regatta 2018, Minx returns to complete the podium in 3rd.

The trio of Cruising Multihulls were initially led by Jaza Too on the first leg. A reshufflling of positions due to critical decisions/challenging conditions resulted in a victorious Witblits, and Jaza Too slipping to 3rd. Cicak took middle ground as the 1st runner-up. Beach Catamarans were represented by Philippe Girardot and son on the Hobie 16. Nice to see the father and son duo taking part in their first Sunday Series Race together. Looking forward to more racing from them in the near future!

Congratulations to all the winners – see you next week for the first race of the Twilight Series II.

Sunday Series 1 – Finale

10th June 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

4 races over 2 months – we’ve finally come to an epic conclusion for our first Sunday Series of the year! Race Organizers decided to send sailors on a Pennant 8 Course with the prevailing South-Westerlies. A close encounter between IRC boats Shardana and Invictus seconds before the horn went made for an exciting start for the Keelboats.

Going into the final race, Jong Dee were in the driving seat, leading the IRC Class by a comfortable 5 points. However, a blunder with their spinnaker bag and a less-than-ideal start added to their woes – finishing the race with a dismal 5th. Despite their poor result, it was just enough to stay 1 point ahead of Invictus in the Series – claiming the IRC title for Sunday Series I. A 2nd place finish by Red Rum yesterday secured them overall 3rd in the Series. New entrants Shardana, who just arrived during the week in preparation for the upcoming CSC@Besar Regatta gave the fleet a good run for their money, coming in 3rd for yesterday’s race. That coupled with a protest against Invictus at the start kept the rest of the sailors on their toes.

Yesterday’s results were a reflection of the PY standings. Another bullet by Zaheera Hashim’s Balqis made it a clean sheet for them, claiming the PY Class title with 4 points. Arbudhen sailed well to finish in 2nd, ahead of close rivals Minx, securing them the 2nd place finish in the Series. Minx completes the podium by finishing 3rd overall, 6 points adrift. From the results, you can tell attendance is key, as all 3 boats on the podium took part in all races for the Series, building a comfortable buffer over the rest of the fleet.

Despite dropping the wrong sail during the race, Cicak still managed to clinch the bullet yesterday – sealing the overall title in the Cruising Multihull Class. Cicak leapfrogged Witblits and Jaza Too, whose DNCs in yesterday was too punishing for them to maintain their position in the overall standings, settling for 2nd and 3rd instead. A solid performance by Baloo earned them a well-deserved 2nd for the final race of the series, finishing in overall 5th.

Will Waddington returns to sail Persian Cat after testing out her new spinnaker on Saturday. This time finishing with a bullet to secure Persian Cat’s victory in the Overall Series. A close fight between Kaze and the Nacra 15 saw the former emerge 7 seconds faster, breaking the dead-lock and taking 2nd position overall. Uli Braun’s Nacra 15 rounds up the winners in 3rd.

Congratulations to all the winners, see you in July for Sunday Series II!

Sunday Series 1 – Race 3

20th May 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

Very light wind conditions plagued the fleet during the 3rd race of the series, leaving some skippers stranded in the doldrums – eventually having to retire from racing. Invictus continue their win streak, taking advantage of the favourable conditions to power ahead of her rivals in the light air and glassy waters. Despite a poor start, she managed line honours with ease – leaving Jong Dee to settle for 2nd and Red Rum to complete the podium in 3rd for the IRC Class.

The PY Class also sees a strong performance from Balqis, who made it 3 bullets from 3 weekends to stretch their lead in both the Sunday Series and Twilight Series. Arbudhen’s consistent placing in the top 3 for every race strengthens her position in the series – finishing a close 2nd and keeping Balqis on her toes. Sapphire Star returns to racing after a short break, managing to just stay ahead of Minx in the race to sneak into 3rd. A starboard-port situation between Cicak and Baloo right after the start definitely heated things up on water for the Cruising Multihull Class. Witblits stretched their lead, taking advantage of a good start to secure another bullet for the series. The husband and wife team on Jaza Too completed the race in 2nd place – ahead of Cicak who managed to sneak into 3rd after handicap.

Seems like the Beach Catamarans took an off-day today, as Scott McCook’s HIPP and Chris Waddington’s Persian Cat made it 2 for the fleet. HIPP sailed well to her handicap, scoring a comfortable win ahead of Persian Cat to notch another win in the series, making it 2 bullets from 3 races. Congratulations to all the winners – we take a break next week due to the J24 & Platu Nationals, see you on 2nd June for the Twilight Race! Results:

Sunday Series 1 – Race 2

6th May 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The 2nd race for our Sunday Series resulted in a few casualties in the multihull class – as Eepai and the Nacra 15 had to retire from their respective classes due to capsizing. Glad to see and hear of sailors going above and beyond to try and look out for their fellow sailors in the water. Rescue efforts were swift and effective due to the immediate reports from various participants on the course. This display of good seamanship from our members is something CSC can be really proud of.

In the Beach Catamaran Class, Scott McCook triumphs single-handed on HIPP, taking line honours and staying comfortably ahead of Uli Braun’s Nacra 15 and Kaze in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The other Nacra 15, sailed single-handed by youth member Bryan Ngu struggled after her initial capsize, and eventually retired from the race. Despite furling their head sail at the Club line and forgetting that the course includes a leg to squance and back, Witblits still managed a win over 2nd placed Cicak by a significant margin in the Cruising Multihull Class.

The PY Class saw 5 boats participating, and Balqis securing another bullet to extend her lead in the series. Southern Light finished a close 2nd, edging out Arbudhen in 3rd. Race 1’s runner up Ikaroa had to retire from the race, leaving her the uphill task of crawling back up in the Series with 2 races to go. A good start from all boats in the IRC Class made it a close fight on the first beat to Changi Buoy. Born in Fire’s motley crew eventually emerged victorious despite a nearly 8 minute lead by Red Rum. Red Rum’s efforts rewarded them with line honours and 2nd place by a slim 6 seconds margin over Jong Dee in 3rd.

With that we conclude the second race for the series, please enjoy the photos and click the link below for the results. Thank you and see you next week for our Twilight Race!

Sunday Series 1 – Race 1

15th April 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The first Sunday Series Race for 2018 had a wide spectrum of conditions, from varying wind strengths to heavy rain, in addition to 180 degree wind shifts and strong outgoing tides to keep things interesting on the course. In the IRC Class, Born in Fire started well to gain the initial advantage over her the rest of the IRC Fleet. Despite being overtaken by the 4 other IRC boats at the end, she still managed to secure a 2nd place finish after handicap, surrendering her victory to Jong Dee. Jong Dee’s triumph was a comeback story, dealing with a poor start and spinnaker issues on the first downwind, she managed to crawl her way back up to clinch the win on handicap. Invictus continue their consistent showing with a 3rd place finish, mirroring their Twilight results from last week.

The PY Class was well attended, with a total of 9 boats in the fleet. The sole J24 in the fleet emerged victorious over her bigger and faster competitors, edging out Ikaroa and Arbudhen respectively in 2nd and 3rd place. Ikaroa now sports a new set of sails purchased from Zoom Sails, and will be looking to use it to her advantage in the coming races.

Jaza Too returns to racing in the best way possible, winning in the Cruising Multihull Class against close rivals Witblits and Cicak in 2nd and 3rd. Kudos to Cicak for scoring a podium finish despite a broken spinnaker halyard midway in the race. Stefan Vidan’s Firefly retired early, probably because of the building storm in the distance. Nonetheless, the crew of Firefly was all smiles on water. Sailing one-up on his Nacra 20 was a big challenge which Damien Geoffray manage to pull off for yesterdays conditions. Although not first after texel corrections, Damien did well enough solo to achieve a 3rd place finish. 1st place and line honours went to Doug Fimmell’s Madfish II, followed closely by Nigel Signal’s Stray Catz.

Congratulations to all the winners, thank you for being part of the first Sunday Series race for 2018!

Sparse And Fickle Winds Unsettle Sunday Series II Finale 2017

12th March 2018/in Competitive Racing, Sunday Series/by CSC

Another day of tricky wind conditions left some sailors with a nearly four-hour long race for the Sunday Series Finale. The poor wind conditions in the early afternoon forced race organisers to send sailors on a pennant five course to Serangoon, hoping the current would be able to take the fleet back to the club line in the light air. Unfortunately, the wind was sparse and fickle on their journey up to Serangoon Buoy, so it was a challenge to make any headway against the outgoing tide.

Stranded in Serangoon

IRC Division Champions from the Twilight Series, Invictus led the fleet from the start, making the return leg with the outgoing tide. She was joined by two beach catamarans and Born in Fire, leaving the remaining boats stranded for a longer time at Serangoon Buoy. With the rest of the fleet still struggling, coupled with the tide turning at 4:00pm, the course was shortened with Invictus taking line honours in the IRC Division.

Unfortunately, they could not lengthen their lead to secure the victory after corrected time, surrendering the bullet to Born in Fire. Jong Dee?s perseverance awarded her with a third-place finish in the IRC Class, and overall Sunday Series II Champions. They completed the series comfortably with a six-point lead over first runner-up Invictus. Regular attendance over the series meant that Simba could still retain third in the series despite not racing in the final two races.

Jubilation on the Waters

In the PY Division, Minx sailed well to take line honours and victory. Their jubilation was well heard as they crossed the finish linein little to no wind. Balqis was a distant second after corrected time and probably thankful for the late easterly breeze that came in to take the rest of the fleet back across the finish line.

Although Wild Card finished ahead of Balqis, their lead was not sufficient to make up for their low handicap and had to settle for third. Despite failing to finish the race yesterday, SDF did enough to clinch the PY Challenge Trophy three points ahead of Minx. SDF?s consistent attendance coupled with a series of podium finishes made this a well-deserved title. Balqis?s overall third in the series were probably due to their absence during the Western Circuit – a commendable result despite not sailing in four races for the series!

Magnificent Multihulls

The Cruising Multihulls out did themselves yet again, with a total of five corsairs and an M23 in attendance for the Finale. It was a reversal from Saturday?s result as Witblits triumphed over Jaza Too to clinch the bullet for the final race. Cicak completed the podium in third, securing their second position in the overall standings.

Despite a poor finish, Baloo had done enough to win the Challenge Trophy in the Cruising Multihull Division, edging out Cicak by two points. Witblits?s late burst of bullets in the last four races was too little too late as Eepai?s two bullets and three other podium finishes put them on a total of 31 points and overall third in the Series.

Cats Battle Katz

Madfish II and Stray Katz had a close contest throughout the course, with Stray Katz taking line honours, but failing to break free from the chasing Madfish II, resulting in the latter?s victory in the Bach Catamaran Class. In the Overall standings, Persian Cat?s third place finish was enough to keep her ahead of Stray Katz by one point, securing the double for the Twilight and Sunday Series II! Madfish II?s bullet in the final race propelled her to tie points with the absent Bad Influence, but missed out on third position due to a fewer number of firsts. Congratulations to all the winners and once again a BIG thank you for another wonderful season of Club racing.
