Sunday Series II 2025 – Race 1

7th July 2025/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

It’s good to be back! After a month-long break, the Sunday Series resumed with renewed energy, welcoming our active keelboat, multihull, and beach catamaran sailors for a spirited afternoon of racing in the East Johor Straits. The weather was on our side, with a steady south-westerly breeze greeting the 12-strong fleet on the start line.

Representing a somewhat sparse IRC fleet—many regulars were away on business travel—Adona and Jong Dee kept the flag flying high. The J29, Adona, showed her class, consistently outpacing the J35 throughout the race. In a thrilling battle with the PY frontrunner, Adona kept Waka Tere on her toes along the Pennant 5 course, delivering great tactical sparring throughout. It was also heartening to welcome back Waka Tere’s skipper, returning to racing with his regular crew after a six-month hiatus.

A fleet of five made for an exciting contest in the PY Class. Jock clinched the top spot — a result that reflected her steady improvement throughout Series I. With multiple rating adjustments now behind her, she seems to be hitting her stride, finishing 1 minute and 54 seconds ahead of Southern Light on corrected time. The result was an added cause for celebration for the joyful crew, still in high spirits from Jakub’s 18th birthday — congratulations! Waka Tere rounded off the podium in third, delivering a commendable performance despite an extended break. Also noteworthy was the return of Brio — it was great to see skipper Michael Chung back at the helm after recovering from a back injury.

Four boats contested the Multihull Class, with Bula proving that size isn’t everything. The nimble trimaran out-sailed her larger Corsair 28 sisters to claim the win. Miss Visayan followed about three minutes behind, fending off Dot Dot Dot, who pushed hard but ultimately had to settle for third. Oojoo, sailing 2-up, looked relaxed and composed throughout, though the Dragonfly couldn’t quite match the pace of the front-runners.

A rare but welcomed sight: Twisted Creature made a guest appearance, reminding us that the Beach Catamaran Class, though quiet lately, is very much alive. We hope this inspires other beach cat owners to dust off their sails and join us for a relaxed and fun afternoon on the water. First-timers—don’t worry, we’ll guide you every step of the way!

Congratulations to all winners and participants!
We look forward to seeing everyone again on 12 June for the first race of the Twilight Series II.

Sunday Series I 2025 – Race 5

26th May 2025/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The 2nd day of this action-packed sailing weekend saw two events running concurrently – the Sunday Series I and May’s Monthly Dinghy Race. While the Dinghy Sailors did not have much luck with the wind, the Keelboats and Multihulls thankfully managed to complete the pennant 4 course on time – despite the conflicting weather systems at play.

The IRC Class flipped the script yesterday, registering as the larger of the 2 Keelboat fleets on the course. Racing was intense, as Adona, Jellico, Shardana and Jong Dee attempted to decipher the shifty winds throughout the afternoon. Jellico emerged as the team to beat, with Skipper Cedric returning from a long break – just in time for next week’s Keelboat One-Design Championships. While she placed 2nd across the line, she had done enough to secure victory on corrected time. Adona’s line honours and runner-up score sealed her win in the series, placing 2 points ahead of Jong Dee in 2nd. Shardana’s 3rd place finish in Race 5 also confirmed her spot on the overall podium, taking 3rd in the series with 9 points.

Represented by only two boats, the Keelboat PY Class missed many of the regulars due to work and leisure travels – leaving Jock and Skybird to spar on the course. Apart from a port-starboard situation, Jock looked re-energized and better performing than the Twilight Race – a good practice showing for next week’s One-Design Championships. The team went on to win the Sunday Series I in the PY Keelboat Class. Coming in second just 2 points behind was Southern Light – her closest competitor and the only other team to qualify for the Series honours.

Collecting the fleet would be a trio of Multihulls – the usual suspects: Dot Dot Dot, Miss Visayan and Bula. It looked like Bula took the backseat today, after a triumphant Twilight outing the day before. Dot Dot Dot brought her A-game, blitzing through the course to take the win in Race 5. Miss Visayan claimed 2nd, and Bula a very close 3rd. The exciting bit came when the numbers were crunched – all three boats were tied on points. The first tie-breaker removed Dot Dot Dot from contention, as she was the only team with 1 bullet. Miss Visayan and Bula had the same number of 1st, 2nds and 3rds – which led to the 2nd tie-breaker; whoever placed better in the last race. With that, Miss Visayan was announced Series I winner, much to the delight of the Skipper and crew!

Congratulations to all the winners – we had fun hosting the first of three finales this year. We take a break and shift our focus to Tioman in June, do join us for a memorable time sailing and racing off the eastern peninsula of Malaysia!

Sunday Series I 2025 – Race 4

5th May 2025/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The recently concluded GE2025 was one of the most exciting elections in the past 2 decades, with the incumbent and the opposition crossing swords over the last 10 days. With the euphoria over and results in, sailors wasted no time to go sailing post-polling day – with clear skies and a gentle westerly breeze greeting the 8 boats on the start line for Sunday Series I, Race 4.

Not completely unlike the white vs the blue, IRC Class was represented by two strong teams, Adona and Jong Dee. The J35 secured the best start and an early lead, dominating the first leg of the pennant 5 course. Unfortunately the lack of a spinnaker on the downwind leg allowed the smaller of the two Js to close the gap, eventually assuming the lead halfway through the course. Kudos to the three-man effort on Jong Dee, for putting up a good fight and holding on to her lead for a substantial period despite the odds. Adona’s triumph set the stage for a finale showdown between the two teams on 25th May – and we can’t wait to watch!

In the PY Class, a team we have not seen since 2024 made a surprise return to the racing scene, and what fun they had! Skipper Gui was a steady helm of Marut – his 25ft Jeanneau Fun. Together with Lucas and Francesca, the team also did well despite missing a spinnaker, placing 2nd on corrected time – just 13 seconds ahead of Skybird in 3rd! The Dehler 34 had a team of young sailors onboard, and it was the skipper’s first foray into Sunday Series sailing after years of abstinence. The mood was good on the Moody 376, as Team Southern Light made amends for last week’s last-place finish, placing first across the line and on handicap.

Completing the fleet were the duo of trimarans comprising of Miss Visayan and Dot Dot Dot. The two 28 footers were neck and neck the whole course, taking turns to overtake each other. Miss Visayan delivered when it mattered, holding on to a lead of just seconds over Dot Dot Dot across the finish line. Excellent effort from both teams, and what a joy to witness! With Bula’s absence for Race 4, the three contenders are separated by just 1 point going into the final race.

Congratulations to all the winners. Despite the small participation numbers, racing for the first sunday series of 2025 has been nothing short of thrilling! We look forward to a nail-biting finale on 25th May.

Sunday Series I 2025 – Race 3

14th April 2025/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

“Nice” would not be the best description for yesterday’s weather, but it was apparently the only adjective that came to the race officer’s mind when addressing the 9 participating yachts on the start line for Sunday Series I, Race 3. Not for the the faint of heart, the weather truly tested the sailors’ grit as they navigated torrential rains, poor visibility and gusty conditions to complete the pennant 2 course.

In the Multihull Class, Bula and Dot Dot Dot brought their A-game, taking turns to lead throughout the course. The fleet struggled with the strong outgoing tide on the last upwind to Squance, with Bula successfully taking the lead to edge ahead of Dot Dot Dot by 20 seconds across the line. It was not Miss Visayan’s best performance, settling for 3rd after a late start.

The PY Keelboat Class was reduced to 2, as Jock decided to take shelter early, avoiding a wet sailing adventure into the unknown and keeping warm for the rest of the afternoon. The remaining contestants battled it out on the east johor straits, with Birregurra taking the lead and holding on to it after an initial struggle at the start. The Hanse 415 made light work of the remaining legs, establishing a 25 minute lead on their only rival, Southern Light.

We welcome Shardana back to the fray, joining Jong Dee and Adona on the start line for the IRC Class.  In Skipper Paul’s absence, The Jong Dee team did him proud, securing a convincing win over the J29 and Dufour 34. The J35 stretched her lead over the 3 legs to squance, eventually finishing 14 minutes ahead of Adona to take line honours and win on corrected time. Skipper Tony missed out on a podium position, but looks all ready for this week’s Bintan Regatta campaign!

Congratulations to all winners – we will have a change of scenery this easter weekend, as we welcome a total of 14 boats from CSC, RSYC, MKB and RM to the pristine waters off Bintan for the 3rd Bintan Regatta 2025.

Sunday Series I 2025 – Race 2

31st March 2025/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The Sunday Series I Race 2 took place on 30th March, eve of Hari Raya. With our operations team knocking off early for the evening celebrations, the remaining staff on duty welcomed the smaller fleet for the Sunday Series, totaling 6 on the start line. Conflicting weather systems made made it a challenging course for all three pairs of boats, representing the IRC, PY and Multihull fleets.

In the Multihull Class, Bula took an early lead on the first leg to Changi Buoy. Dot Dot Dot kept it close throughout the rest of the pennant 3 course, but could not successfully overtake her smaller rival. With her first win for the series and perfect attendance, Bula now has a slight advantage over the absent Miss Visayan, the defending champion for 2024.

The next pair to feature is Jong Dee and Shardana from the Keelboat IRC Class. The J35 and Dufour 34 while similar in length, are rated significantly different from each other – with Jong Dee supposedly the quicker of the two. However the tricky conditions on the course got the better of the team, allowing for Shardana to consolidate her lead and earn a well-deserved victory in Race 2.

Last but not least, Southern Light and Jock represent the Keelboat PY Class, and what an interesting start it was! A slight nudge from the Race Committee perked the Moody 376 in the right direction, switching to race mode and recovering from the late start to attempt catching the more nimble J24 on the first leg to Changi Buoy. She was successful, and eventually pulled ahead on the long stretch to serangoon, putting enough distance between them and Jock to seal a comfortable victory over the Jockstars.

Congratulations to all winners – see you on 5th April for the 2nd race of the Twilight Series I. Here’s wishing everyone Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, have a blessed and joyous celebration with family and loved ones.

Sunday Series I 2025 – Race 1

24th March 2025/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

After a successful saturday twilight, the sunday series turnout seemed significantly smaller, with only 7 boats on the start line. Nevertheless, the northeast monsoon delivered beautiful sailing conditions, as sailors enjoyed the cooler weather and overcast skies for their journey to Tekong Buoy and back.

Joining us for racing was the reigning Singapore Regatta champion & recently crowned Horsburgh Challenge winner, Jolt. The J99 chose to register in the PY class for this series, citing wrong sails and insufficient crew. She was unfortunately only joined by the smaller J in the fleet – Jock. The J24 without their spinnaker could not close the gap between her and her larger and quicker relative, settling for second in the PY Class.

Representing the IRC fleet were also another two variants from the J family – Adona and Jong Dee. Together with Shardana, a Dufour 34, this trio of performance cruisers made up the largest class for the afternoon. Adona and Jong Dee got into a little match racing action at the start – providing opportunity for Shardana to take an early lead and establish some distance from her rivals. When the dust settled, there was a shuffle in the finishing positions across the line, with Adona taking line honours and Jong Dee following 3 minutes after. Shardana’s 1 minute gap between Jong Dee and her was all she needed to secure a comfortable 2 minute lead on Jong Dee after handicap correction. Adona’s win was not without a little pre-race snafu, with skipper Richard saving the day when he placed his hand in his left pocket.

In the Multihull Class, we resume the familiar two-boat action between Miss Visayan and Bula. The former took an early lead, but Bula kept things close throughout the course. The race was completed with a swift 1-2 finish for the two corsairs, good clean fun from both teams!

Thank you everyone for joining us for this unusual double weekend start to the series. We resume the alternate weekends with Sunday Series I Race 2 scheduled for 30th March. See you all then!

CSC Sunday Series III 2024 (Race 5)

3rd December 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

On Sunday, the last race for Sunday Series saw 10 boats racing in a different wind and water condition. Westerly wind prevails together with outgoing tide is a race that must be tough situation to be in. Sailors need to adapt their strategies based on the conditions, and on this decisive day, those who can make the best of the condition often come out ahead – leaving the outcome uncertain until the last race. Teams will use all their experience, knowledge, and tactics to outsmart their rivals. In the overall 2024 Sunday Series leaderboard results; Miss Visayan skippered by Gary Curtis remained the champion, an almost perfect score (1st place on 13 out of 15 races!) what an incredibly well-determined team! Bula (Michael Flecker) stays put in 2nd place and Dot Dot Dot skippered by David Steel managed to get onto the podium against 3 more contenders in the fleet!

For the Keelboat Club Racer (PY Division), despite missing the last race, Waka Tere skippered by Kurt Metzger did his homework to have enough number of good races to stay on the top the fleet. A very secured 1st place against 12 boats in the entire series. Coming in the 2nd place, also missed the last race, Basil Byrnes did not forget to collect races to stay in podium finish. Jock skippered by Suzanne Updike and her team collected the 3rd place in this year’s overall series results.

We would like to thank all the skippers and their crew for participating every single race weekly! The dedication and sportsmanship amongst the sailors were incredible! Without them, the Twilight and Sunday Series would not be possible. Special thanks to our CSC Race Management team and the staff for their contribution to the smooth running of these events.

Congratulations to all the winners! And thank you for all those who participated in this year’s events!

A very well-deserved holiday break to everyone! See you again on the Hang-Over race, 1st January 2025!

CSC Sunday Series III 2024 (Race 4)

18th November 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

As we inch closer to the finale weekend on 30th November-1st December, the Club sees a significant reduction in participation at the regular Sunday and Twilight Series races. This could be due to a number of reasons, such as the commencing of the school holiday season, regional regattas (RMSIR & PKCR), and perhaps just an extended recovery period post-Ambassadors’ Cup. Nevertheless, it was still good vibes and great weather at the 4th Sunday Series Race III, also the penultimate Sunday Series Race for 2024. A total of 10 boats were on the start line, with 3 teams representing each class and Addiction flying solo in the Beach Catamaran class.

After a horrid late morning thunderstorm, the skies cleared in time for a delayed start, with winds picking up from the west. Race Organisers played it cautious, and flew the pennant 2 course, which takes sailors on a journey to Squance and CSC 1, for three loops. The strong tides eventually forced a shortened course after two loops, allowing all boats to finish well within the time limit.

In the IRC Class, a strong showing from Jong Dee on the first beat to Squance caught their rivals by surprise, prompting the other two Js to switch things up a notch on the downwind leg. The lack of sufficient crew to fly their spinnaker proved to be the J35’s ultimate downfall, as she lost significant ground and subsequently got overtaken. Adona settled into a comfortable groove to take top spot by a comfortable 10 minutes over 2nd placed Jellico.

Hot on the tail of the IRC fleet was the whizbang team onboard Waka Tere, joined by a crew more familiarly found on Bound to Please – Colin and family. Waka Tere extended their lead to take first place in the PY Class comfortably, but that was not all. She had sailed superbly to catch up with the IRC fleet, whizzing past Jellico to finish amongst them. The remaining two PY boats tussled for 2nd place, with Birregurra dodging multiple commercial vessels in the channel while deploying the right tactics to counter the strong currents – earning herself a well-deserved place on the podium.

In Miss Visayan’s absence, Dot Dot Dot, Bula and Kaze battled hard – leaving it all on the course. Kudos to Dot Dot Dot for sailing solo and even leading the fleet for a significant time! SHe was neck and neck with Kaze all the way to the finish line, with Kaze taking the win for Race 4. Bula’s best efforts just could not match up with Dot Dot Dot’s superior performance, leaving her without a shot glass for the weekend.

Congratulations to all winners, and thank you everyone for joining us! You may find attached the current standings for the overall 2024 Sunday Series leaderboard. Due to the poor attendance from the Beach Catamaran fleet, the challenge trophy will not be presented this year. See you on 23rd November for the penultimate race of the Twilight Series, and the following weekend for the Club Series Finale!

CSC Sunday Series III 2024 (Race 3)

28th October 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

What a glorious time to be sailing! With a fresh westerly breeze blessing the Johor Straits, accompanied by clear and sunny skies – the conditions were near-perfect for Race 3 of the Sunday Series III. A modest fleet of 8 Keelboats and 3 Multihulls were present yesterday. We suspect many were conserving their energy for our signature sailing-social event next week, the 23rd Ambassadors’ Cup 2024. Despite the small attendance, racing was tight and fierce across all classes, with many battles taken all the way to the finish line!

In the Multihull Class, All three boats were separated by only a minute in total, as Miss Visayan, Bula and Kaze were neck and neck for the entire duration of the race. Gary & Co. fought tooth and nail to hold on to top spot, leaving the battle for 2nd spot between the 2 dashes. it was a mad dash for the finish line, with Bula pipping Kaze across the line by a mere 9 seconds. Bravo to all!

Leading the IRC fleet and outclassing her opponents for the day was the extremely competitive Adona, whose tremendous boat speed meant that she spent much of her time sailing against the Multihulls instead of the Monohulls, establishing a comfortable gap between her and the chasing Js. Ad and team reveled in the prevailing conditions, taking top spot by 2 minutes on corrected time. The tussle for 2nd saw Jellico edge out Jong Dee, as both boats gave it their all on the final downwind to finish,

Leveraging on the stronger breeze, it was refreshing to see Remington return to the podium! The S&S 42 was made to work hard for the win, determined to not let Birregurra and Waka Tere out of sight during the race. Her efforts rewarded her with a victory, just 20 seconds ahead of Jock on corrected time! The Jockstars continue their fine form, and are enroute to finishing the year on a high for both the Sunday Series and the Twilight Series. She is joined by one of the most consistent teams of this season – Waka Tere! Arguable the team that is happiest when they place 3rd in races, the dynamic duo that is Kurt and Gill had 2 extra  pair of hands onboard yesterday, definitely helpful when the winds pick up!

Congratulations to all winners, I look forward to Bringing the World Together with all of you this Saturday!

CSC Sunday Series III 2024 (Race 2)

14th October 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The conflicting monsoon systems continue to clash, resulting in erratic wind conditions and sporadic showers – creating a overly dramatic backdrop for the 2nd race of the CSC Sunday Series III. The winds left as quickly as it arrived, leaving half the fleet stranded at serangoon buoy before a gentle south-westerly returned them to CSC.

In the IRC Class, Jong Dee flaunted their new asymmetrical spinnaker, and delivered a much better performance compared to the weeks before. However, she fell just short of her smaller but more nimble adversaries – Adona and Jellico. The J24 scored her first victory for the series, pipping Adona to the top spot on corrected time. Cedric’s race winning performance meant that the J24 and J29 now share top spot for Sunday Series III after 2 races, setting the stage for an exciting final 3 races to the end of the 2024.

Waka Tere amazed all on water with another impressive performance – securing line honours comfortably and overtaking 2 of the IRC boats in the process. Her score was bested by only 1 boat, Shardana! The Dufour 34 claimed her first victory for the season, placing 2nd across the line and first on handicap. Captain Tony and team have started their preparations for this year’s Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, and their recent results will certainly be very encouraging in the lead up to the event. Completing the podium in 3rd is the ever reliable Birregurra. Despite trailing behind in the lighter air, she made it out of the doldrums just in time to be the last boat to join the leading fleet.

Now with Kaze joining the fray, the Multihull fleet looks invigorated! Xavier and Damien sought to replicate their race winning performance from last week’s Twilight, only to be left off the winners’ list, placing 3rd. She had performed well at the start, leading together with Bula for the first stretch, leaving Miss Visayan to play catch-up. Gary and crew however played the conditions well, eventually overtaking the dash and the sprint to claim line honours and victory in her class. Bula emerged the better of the remaining 2, securing the remaining spot on the podium.

Addiction continue to represent to beach catamaran fleet in her usual fashion – late across the start and playing catch-up. This time, she struggled to overtake all the multihulls, something she usually manages with ease. She eventually crossed the finish line just behind Miss Visayan,  possibly a sign of her struggles with the erratic conditions.

Congratulations to all the winners – see you next week for more racing as we conduct the 2nd race of the Twilight Series III.
