CSC Ketam Coastal Clean-Up 2024
The post-COVID continuation of the Ketam clean-up saw 13 enthusiastic volunteers from NUS Seafarers, along with five boats from Changi Sailing Club, tackling a mountain of sea trash around the mangroves at Pulau Ketam. Together, they collected nearly 300 kg of maritime waste.
A big thank you to the skippers who offered their boats and expertise to guide the eager NUS students and alumni. It was a pleasant beam reach to Ketam Island, with The Dash, skippered by Wolfgang and his NUS crew, dashing ahead of the pack. Skybird and Calyndrix followed at their own pace, while Prof. Martin brought up the rear in Bobo Chacha with the remaining students. Not a race, of course—but who’s counting?
The students appreciated the experience, emphasizing the role of community service in keeping our waters clean. “It was humbling,” said I Made Timothy, “to be surrounded by mountains of trash.” His sardonic remark captured the group’s shared realization: despite collecting a significant amount, the clean-up only scratched the surface. Clearly, the work of maritime conservation and anti-pollution efforts needs to begin at the source.
Once again, many thanks to the following boats for their support. We hope to see even more hands on deck for the next clean-up:
• The Dash
• Skybird
• Calyndrix
• Bobo Chacha
• Southern Light
