2024 CSC Optimist Championship (Silver Fleet) Final Day!

16th December 2024/in Competitive Racing/by CSC

Final day of the 2-day racing of 2024 CSC Optimist Championship, sailors were greeted by a nice and gentle wind breeze blowing from Northeasterly direction. A positive indication of an exciting and more action packed last day of racing. Sailors launched early to have some time to test waters and adapt to the new wind condition, a good sail down to their course area. As the usual, racers were doing their routine of sailing upwind and downwind, making a final checks of the course area. Just before the warning signal begins, situation has changed. The wind dropped and current starting to gush in, another painful scenario for these young champions! The weather condition has changed from great to worst, which forced the race officials to delay the start, again! After a long waiting and discussions, finally Race 5 is on sequence! But that didn’t go well with current strengthened and lack of wind speed causes these boats to be pushed over above the start line, plenty of pre-mature starters, a reason to call out the boats back to the line.  With some pressure kicked in, or should say  an “on-off” wind condition, the team attempted again for another start and yes, we managed to finish race 5 in time for another wind shift and more cloud formations around the area. It gets trickier and more challenging for racers and specially to the race management team.

With some luck and perseverance, Race 6 carried on, an interesting race with switching places of leading boat between SGP 3470 (Alaric Naidu), SGP 3663 (Kirsten Tan) and SGP 3343 (Cyrus Chiam). These sailors put up a good performance showcasing their boat handling skills and tactical knowledge in a tough sailing conditions. At the end of Race 6, SGP 3343 (Cyrus Chiam) victory for Cyrus, took the last bullet of this year’s CSC Optimist Championship. A very well sailed final race! Meanwhile, in our CSC squadron, SGP 776 (Charlene Yong) dropped 1 place from day 1 race result, however she remained to be in the top 10 podium (4th Overall), 2nd place for Female and 10 yrs and under category. SGP 773 (Estelle Yeo) gave a surprised attack in the last 2 races, finishing a strong points that pulled her up from 14th place to 5th in the Overall, 3rd in Female and 3rd also in the 10 yrs and under.

Another surprise from CSC team, SGP 757 (Kai Chen-Yi) snatched the last spot in the podium from his great contender in the 8 yrs and under category, SGP 2030 (Euan Po Hao Xuan) with only 2 points apart. Well done all CSC racers! We are proud of you! In the overall results, SGP 3363 (Kirsten Tan En Ting) from SAFYC swept the prizes, an impressive results from this young lady! Congratulations for winning this year’s CSC Optimist Championship – Silver Fleet!

Despite of the challenges over the weekend racing, these young sailors did their very best and put in a great effort to race against the best sailors in this their own category. We hope that they have learnt new experience racing in Changi, enjoyed their time at the club and made good memories that will inspire them to come back better and stronger in their next visit, January 18 & 19, 2025! We will see you again! Kudos to all the kiddos!

Changi Sailing Club would like to thank the sailors and parents for supporting our event. Chief Race Officer, Ryan Kwok and his Race Management team for doing such a great job under challenging and tricky 2 days of racing. And of course, let’s not forget the coaches!!! For their limitless patience, motivation, discipline and teachings to these future champions! Thank you coaches for going beyond in ensuring sailors’ readiness in facing these challenges be it on water or land, well done coach!

2024 CSC Optimist Championship (Silver Fleet) Day 1

14th December 2024/in Competitive Racing/by CSC

Seventy five (75) enthusiastic Optimist sailors competed in the annual CSC Optimist Championship in the waters of Loyang, Pasir Ris racing against strong current and shifty wind condition, classic CSC sailing condition! A slight delay on the targeted start time as the Race Management team waited for decent and stable wind, a slow start to begin. After almost an hour, the orange flag was displayed signalling that the race is going to start! Everyone was moving up to the start line and boats crossed the start line, sailing steadily towards the top mark. However, the race was abandoned due to strong current and wind dropped forcing everyone to stop and waited again at the start line. Finally, wind picked up and the race is on! Race 1. But, as the sailors sail downwind to their gate marks, a huge wind shift were felt coming from the left side, with no choice…the race committee decided to display a C flag over red which created confusion to some sailors. That’s how important to know and understand your racing flag signal, it can be an advantage! CSC’s sailor finished strong in 1st place courtesy of SGP 766 (Charlene Yong), good strategy sailing with the current and wind shift condition beating SAFYC’s top sailors SGP 3663 (Kirsten Tan En Ting) and SGP 3881 (Cory Loh) came 2nd & 3rd respectively. Unfortunately, only 17 sailors managed to finish this race, sailors were drifting backwards and couldn’t handle the gushing flow of tide, weaker wind and rounding at the wrong mark.

Race 2, the race management team decided to give the sailors a shorter course but a definitely much better option to have more sailors finishing this time. SAFYC sailors SGP 3663 (Kirsten Tan En Ting) and SGP 3128 Aaron Chiang Zhiyi secured the top 2 spots meanwhile CSC sailor SGP 773 (Estelle Yeo) took the 3rd place bounce back from a DNF in her previous race, a strong come back from her together with her team mate SGP 734 (Arun Behl) on 5th spot. A faster racing time with good wind steadily coming from West helped majority of the sailor to finish their race. Race 3, more stable wind condition and slightly slower current changed the race score results, with SGP 3881 (Cory Loh) finished 1st and SGP 3454 (Chen Wang Sun) in 2nd, SGP 3343 (Cyrus Chiam) in 3rd and SGP 773 (Estelle Yeo) in 4th shook the score sheets.

Race 4, the final race of the day!

The arrival of the Northeasterly wind made it more interesting! and completely changed sailors’ strategy and plans. The race started with wind blowing from Westerly, however on their 2nd upwind the condition changed as the NE monsoon pushed West wind away and took over the area, a 180 degrees turn. Despite the change, this actually helped some sailors that was still struggling to reach the top mark, with some sail adjustments and steady boat handling, an easy race to end the day. Unfamiliar in the podium spot, from PAAC, SGP 4731 (Zachary Goh Yi Jie) took the 1st place, another new comer in the podium, SGP 2022 (Padmaeja Rajakanth) from CWSS and from SAFYC, SGP 3217 (Irwin Yit Kei Fung) definitely impacted the race results in today’s racing!

Meanwhile in the much younger racer (8 yrs and under), leading in the board is SPP 3663 (Kirsten Tan)  with 13 points, SGP 4729 (Abby Chen Yan Ying on 83 points and SGP 2030 (Euan Poh Hao Xuan) currently in 1st, 2nd & 3rd respectively.

Kuddos to all the sailors today enduring the tricky sailing condition on water, a test of perseverance, patience and for showing a good sportsmanship on water. For sure that the experience and learnings they had today will be useful for another day of racing tomorrow!

Well done today!  3 races to go!

CSC Sunday Series III 2024 (Race 5)

3rd December 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

On Sunday, the last race for Sunday Series saw 10 boats racing in a different wind and water condition. Westerly wind prevails together with outgoing tide is a race that must be tough situation to be in. Sailors need to adapt their strategies based on the conditions, and on this decisive day, those who can make the best of the condition often come out ahead – leaving the outcome uncertain until the last race. Teams will use all their experience, knowledge, and tactics to outsmart their rivals. In the overall 2024 Sunday Series leaderboard results; Miss Visayan skippered by Gary Curtis remained the champion, an almost perfect score (1st place on 13 out of 15 races!) what an incredibly well-determined team! Bula (Michael Flecker) stays put in 2nd place and Dot Dot Dot skippered by David Steel managed to get onto the podium against 3 more contenders in the fleet!

For the Keelboat Club Racer (PY Division), despite missing the last race, Waka Tere skippered by Kurt Metzger did his homework to have enough number of good races to stay on the top the fleet. A very secured 1st place against 12 boats in the entire series. Coming in the 2nd place, also missed the last race, Basil Byrnes did not forget to collect races to stay in podium finish. Jock skippered by Suzanne Updike and her team collected the 3rd place in this year’s overall series results.

We would like to thank all the skippers and their crew for participating every single race weekly! The dedication and sportsmanship amongst the sailors were incredible! Without them, the Twilight and Sunday Series would not be possible. Special thanks to our CSC Race Management team and the staff for their contribution to the smooth running of these events.

Congratulations to all the winners! And thank you for all those who participated in this year’s events!

A very well-deserved holiday break to everyone! See you again on the Hang-Over race, 1st January 2025!

CSC Twilight Series III 2024 (Race 5)

3rd December 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Twilight Series/by CSC

Over the weekend (30 Nov & 1 Dec), CSC held it’s back-to-back finale races for 2024 Twilight Series & Sunday Series. An interesting and tricky wind condition in each racing day.  The final 2 days of sail racing was an exciting and action-packed event, where the culmination of a series of races for the entire year of 2024 determines the ultimate champion. The final set of races between the top competitors, with stakes high and the weather playing a crucial role. The scores leading up to this point can either guarantee a champion or wind speed and direction can dramatically change the outcome of the races.

In the Twilight Series (Saturday), 12 boats took part in the final race for Series 3. In the IRC Division, a tight result between Paul Kendall (Jong Dee) and Ad Smit (Adona) in this year’s final series results, after a discard, both tied points, however with a greater number of 1st place, Adona won the 1st place and the Challenge Trophy! Jong Dee secured the 2nd place against Atul Sinha (Simba) on 3rd place.

For the PY Division, “consistency is the key”! With full attendance this year, Suzanne Updike (Jock) sweep the 1st place against greatest contenders: Waka Tere (Kurt Metzger) in 2nd place, despite of missing the last 2 races and Birregurra (Basil Brynes) kept it steady on 3rd place. And for the Multihull Division, Sirius Swift skippered by Eugene Wong were serious to be in the podium this year, finishing 3rd is a great show. Bula (Michael Flecker) put up a great race in the series and happy in their 2nd place. The fastest boat amongst the trimaran fleet, Miss Visayan skillfully skippered by Gary Curtis remained strong and unbeatable tightly secured the 1st place!

Congratulations to all the winners! Have a great holiday break and get ready for the next series, next year!
