CSC Twilight Series II 2024 (Race 3)

26th August 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Twilight Series/by CSC

CSC sailors returned from a long break, with the attention previously focused on the recently concluded National Day celebrations and Western Circuit Sailing Regatta taking place in the first half of August. Although the Southwest monsoon continue to delight sailors on the southern and western coasts of Singapore, these winds tend to be more fickle along the east johor straits, with participants of the 3rd Twilight Series II race experiencing the tricky conditions firsthand. A total of 12 boats were present on the start line, and coupled with strong outgoing tide, made for a challenging evening on the course.

In the IRC Class, Adona executed a textbook start, putting on an impressive display of  an excellent start routine and follow-up boat speed. She was a cut above the rest, crossing the line comfortably in first place and registering a 17 point lead over her closest adversary, Simba. On the other end of the fleet, Jong Dee’s poor start meant that it was an uphill struggle from the beginning. Despite her best efforts, she had to settle for 3rd on corrected time.

A great start certainly does not guarantee a spot on the podium, and this was unfortunately the case for Slingshot. The race 1 winner also executed a near-perfect start in the PY Class, but the weakening breeze and a tactical mistake after rounding Changi Buoy proved costly for the GK 24, ending her Race 3 campaign in a disappointing 5th on corrected time. On the podium were familiar names, starting with Jock! The J24 had recently returned from a successful WCSR, finishing 2nd overall for the 2-day event. Now back in our club races with skipper Suzanne at the helm, the refreshed club boat secured top spot ahead of Nevis and Waka Tere respectively.

The multihull rivalry continues, as Miss V and Bula return to vie for top spot. The former bounced back from a pre-mature rounding of CSC 1, successfully defending against a dashing Bula looking to capitalize on the error. Sirius Swift were calm and composed for most of the race, only to suffer a delay to their finish time on the last stretch due to technical difficulties involving a gybe. Despite the troubles, it was still overall a good day out on water for the fleet.

We’re glad to have most of the fleet back from summer holidays and the WCSR – we look forward to club races returning to full swing. Join us for live music, tasty food and cool drinks on 30th August, Members’ Night! Following that, we have Race 4 of the Sunday Series II taking place on 1st September.

Last but not least, do not forget to register for the Ambassadors’ Cup by next week to enjoy early-bird discounts!

CSC Sunday Series II 2024 (Race 3)

5th August 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The predicted rainy weather for august was on full display during the Sunday Series II, Race 3. The cooler temperature was a welcomed respite from the scorching heat in July, as all 10 boats enjoyed the wet ride to Serangoon and back. Faced with a westerly breeze and strong outgoing tide, sailors also had the challenging task of navigate up the channel amongst a parade of commercial vessels plying the east johor straits.

In the Multihull Class, Miss Visayan and Bula return to contest for line honours. It was truely a close rivalry, and both teams were neck and neck throughout. Bula led the first leg, rounding CSC 1 ahead of Miss Visayan to continue on to Squance and back. The latter however shifted into another gear to edge ahead of Bula, crossing the finish line just 47 seconds ahead of Michael and team to secure her 2nd bullet for the series to take the advantage going into race 4.

Some thrills and spills occurred in the PY Keelboat class, as the cameraman had the unique opportunity to catch the crew aboard Forever Young going…. overboard. Thankfully swift action from the rest of the crew meant that he was safely retrieved, and the team escaped only with a wet spinnaker and incriminating photos. The Young 84 however displayed a more professional performance on the course, earning a well-deserved 2nd place on corrected time. She trails Waka Tere by 4 minutes and 44 seconds across the line, a distance too much to make any difference after handicap correction. We also had a commendable performance from Wild Thing, skippered by John Moore and Gerry McCrossan. The reflex 28 bounced back from last week’s poor performance, and successfully deployed the spinnaker on the downwind leg to complete the race in 3rd.

Representing the IRC Class was a remarkable trio of Js, a fiery contest of tactics and skill. The smallest of the three also struggled with the smallest number of crew, evident in their troubles faced during the hoists, drops and mark roundings. Nevertheless, Jellico made the best out of the situation, and successfully defended against the bigger and faster Jong Dee. The J35’s efforts fell just short of a podium position, as Adona’s commanding performance assured her top spot both across the line and on corrected time.

Congratulations to all winners, and Happy National Day to all! We take a break over the national day weekend, followed by the Western Circuit Sailing Regatta on 17 and 18 August. Club racing resumes on 24 August, with the 3rd race for the Twilight Series II. See you then.
