2024 CSC MONTHLY DINGHY RACE (THE FINALE)

29th October 2024/in Competitive Racing, Sailing/by CSC

“We closed out the calendar of Monthly Dinghy Races with a bang!

The final regatta of the year brought perfect conditions, with beautiful weather and excellent winds.

Despite some of our regular sailors being away competing in international events, we still enjoyed a strong turnout, with 25 Optimists spread across three classes: Alpha, Bravo, and new racers from Charlie and 14 sailors in the Open Class, including ILCA 4, 6, 7, and Topper. We also celebrated a record-breaking turnout in the ILCA 6 fleet. Four exciting, back-to-back races were held, with rolling starts between the Open and Optimist classes, keeping the pace lively and the competition fierce.

To wrap up the last prize-giving ceremony of the year, parents contributed to a potluck buffet, ending the day with the warm camaraderie that our club is known for. None of this would have been made possible without the dedication of our coaches, Jhing, André, Angela, Hanna, Joshua Matthew and Megan, who spared no efforts to keep all kids engaged and excited about the sport throughout the year.

On behalf of the race management team aboard the committee boat and everyone who supported us during the entire season, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you for your unwavering support”. -Claudio Salgado (Race Officer)

Well done to all the winners of 2024 CSC Monthly Dinghy Race! A huge thank you also to all the sailors that did their very best to come down to the club every month to join us! We will see you again in 2025 and hopefully this inspires our members to race with us and experience the thrill and excitement competing against CSC’s best dinghy racers!

Thank you everyone!

CSC Sunday Series III 2024 (Race 3)

28th October 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

What a glorious time to be sailing! With a fresh westerly breeze blessing the Johor Straits, accompanied by clear and sunny skies – the conditions were near-perfect for Race 3 of the Sunday Series III. A modest fleet of 8 Keelboats and 3 Multihulls were present yesterday. We suspect many were conserving their energy for our signature sailing-social event next week, the 23rd Ambassadors’ Cup 2024. Despite the small attendance, racing was tight and fierce across all classes, with many battles taken all the way to the finish line!

In the Multihull Class, All three boats were separated by only a minute in total, as Miss Visayan, Bula and Kaze were neck and neck for the entire duration of the race. Gary & Co. fought tooth and nail to hold on to top spot, leaving the battle for 2nd spot between the 2 dashes. it was a mad dash for the finish line, with Bula pipping Kaze across the line by a mere 9 seconds. Bravo to all!

Leading the IRC fleet and outclassing her opponents for the day was the extremely competitive Adona, whose tremendous boat speed meant that she spent much of her time sailing against the Multihulls instead of the Monohulls, establishing a comfortable gap between her and the chasing Js. Ad and team reveled in the prevailing conditions, taking top spot by 2 minutes on corrected time. The tussle for 2nd saw Jellico edge out Jong Dee, as both boats gave it their all on the final downwind to finish,

Leveraging on the stronger breeze, it was refreshing to see Remington return to the podium! The S&S 42 was made to work hard for the win, determined to not let Birregurra and Waka Tere out of sight during the race. Her efforts rewarded her with a victory, just 20 seconds ahead of Jock on corrected time! The Jockstars continue their fine form, and are enroute to finishing the year on a high for both the Sunday Series and the Twilight Series. She is joined by one of the most consistent teams of this season – Waka Tere! Arguable the team that is happiest when they place 3rd in races, the dynamic duo that is Kurt and Gill had 2 extra  pair of hands onboard yesterday, definitely helpful when the winds pick up!

Congratulations to all winners, I look forward to Bringing the World Together with all of you this Saturday!

CSC Youth Sailors at the 16th Eastern Seaboard Regatta 2024 (Pattaya, Thailand)

23rd October 2024/in Competitive Racing/by CSC

Our heartfelt congratulations to our Youth Sailors (ILCA and Optimist) for a remarkable victory at the recent sailing competition at the 16th Eastern Seaboard Regatta in Royal Varuna Yacht, Pattaya, Thailand held from 17th to 21st October. The dedication, skill, and unwavering determination truly shone through, and it was inspiring to witness your exemplary performance on the water.

“My sailing experience for the 2024 Eastern Seaboard Regatta started off slow. There was no wind and big storms the first 2 days of the regatta so we waited around the club and didn’t get to sail at all. The races only started on the 3rd day with light wind and choppy waves. I suspect that the race committee really wanted us to get some races in with no races for 2 days.  We managed to have 4 races but the conditions were very challenging as the wind was super shifty and the current was really strong. Surprisingly, I did quite well and I was 20th out of 58 ILCA 4s and I was also 5th for the Under 15 category.  I didn’t think that I had much of a chance at a medal as the competition was tough. But I decided that I was going to try my best anyway and really hoped that there would be wind on the final day. We got lucky with strong winds on our last day and I managed to climb up through 2 good races, just behind my CSC team mate Ikuto, to get 2nd place in the Under 15 and 15th overall with a big smile on my face”. – Misa Lim Laurie (ILCA 4 sailor)

“The conditions were tough; waves were choppy which killed my boat speed and the wind was light. As a heavy weight sailor, it was hard for me to get back my speed after losing them. In this four day regatta, we could only sail for the last two days due to the weather conditions. This meant for me that I could not afford any bad races. Although the tension level was high, I managed to sail well, especially my start. I want to say thank you to my coaches, and the organisers”. – Ikuto Mori (ILCA 4 sailor)

“For my fourth regatta overseas, I went to the Eastern Seaboard Regatta 2024 with some sailor friends. It was my first regatta sailing in Thai waters and I was really excited! Upon reaching Royal Varuna Yacht Club, the familiar scene of rows and rows of competition boats greeted me and I was raring to go! However, the weather was rainy and winds were too light for the first four days we were there. I only managed to sail twice for practice and the first two regattas’ days, we had no races.

Day 3 came, and the weather was brilliant! We managed 4 races that day! Although the sea was slightly choppier and the resisting current was strong, many of my sailor friends and I had managed to finish 4 good races. The competition was stiff and despite being in Gold fleet in Singapore, I only managed to get into the Silver fleet for Day 4. Although I felt discouraged, I was proud to be sailing among many great sailors from many different countries! On the last day, I gave my best for the last 2 races and did better.

Overall, I really enjoyed this experience sailing at RVYC’s Eastern Seaboard Regatta 2024. Not only did I make new friends, I picked new skills while racing against tip-top regional sailors. I’m both happy and grateful that I joined this regatta!” – Mohamed Mikail Bin Mohamed Shahrom (Optimist sailor)

Congratulations once again on your win! We look forward to see more of your achievements in an international sailing competition!

Changi Sailing Club’s coaches, staff and management are very proud of these young champions!

Cheers to the next one!

CSC Twilight Series III 2024 (Race 2)

20th October 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Twilight Series/by CSC

We are fast approaching the 23rd Ambassadors Cup! Sailors take the opportunity to shake out the dust from their sails and get some practice in with the remaining 2 weekends of Club racing before the event. In true inter-monsoon fashion, winds were unpredictable and patchy across the course for the Twilight Series III race 2, making it a challenging sail for all 13 boats participating.

The multihull class was well represented , as Miss V, Sirius Swift, Bula and Kaze return to contest for line honours. An over-zealous Kaze started with a disadvantage, having to dip below the line to exonerate herself from a pre-mature start. She however clawed her way back to the top, finishing seconds ahead of fierce rivals Miss Visayan – talk about a great comeback! Bula emerged the best of the rest, finishing ahead of Sirius Swift to claim 3rd.

We also witnessed some close racing in the PY Class, as sailors bunched up on the first mark rounding at Changi Buoy. While Waka Tere and Sapphire Star pulled ahead early, Birregurra, Remington, Jock and Summer Breeze made it around the mark in quick succession. The 2 boats upfront were sailing with only 2-up, with Waka Tere trying her best to extend her lead. Unfortunately her efforts were insufficient to defend against a slippery Sapphire Star, whose superb performance scored her a victory on corrected time. A pre-mature start did not stop Jock from scoring a place on the podium, as she did well to close the gap with the fleet and claim 2nd on handicap.

It was a battle between a J29, X342 and Dehler 39 in the IRC Class, with the smallest boat sailing the fastest race. Adona reveled in Saturday’s weather, a joint effort by Ad, Luke and the “Australian” earned the team a bullet for Race 2. She successfully quelled another strong solo performance by Lucas, who sailed Minx to a 2nd place finish – pipping Simba for the prize.

Congratulations to all winners, we hope you enjoyed the racing! See you next week for the Sunday Series III, Race 3. And after that, we look forward to bringing the world together on 2nd November.

CSC Sunday Series III 2024 (Race 2)

14th October 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

The conflicting monsoon systems continue to clash, resulting in erratic wind conditions and sporadic showers – creating a overly dramatic backdrop for the 2nd race of the CSC Sunday Series III. The winds left as quickly as it arrived, leaving half the fleet stranded at serangoon buoy before a gentle south-westerly returned them to CSC.

In the IRC Class, Jong Dee flaunted their new asymmetrical spinnaker, and delivered a much better performance compared to the weeks before. However, she fell just short of her smaller but more nimble adversaries – Adona and Jellico. The J24 scored her first victory for the series, pipping Adona to the top spot on corrected time. Cedric’s race winning performance meant that the J24 and J29 now share top spot for Sunday Series III after 2 races, setting the stage for an exciting final 3 races to the end of the 2024.

Waka Tere amazed all on water with another impressive performance – securing line honours comfortably and overtaking 2 of the IRC boats in the process. Her score was bested by only 1 boat, Shardana! The Dufour 34 claimed her first victory for the season, placing 2nd across the line and first on handicap. Captain Tony and team have started their preparations for this year’s Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, and their recent results will certainly be very encouraging in the lead up to the event. Completing the podium in 3rd is the ever reliable Birregurra. Despite trailing behind in the lighter air, she made it out of the doldrums just in time to be the last boat to join the leading fleet.

Now with Kaze joining the fray, the Multihull fleet looks invigorated! Xavier and Damien sought to replicate their race winning performance from last week’s Twilight, only to be left off the winners’ list, placing 3rd. She had performed well at the start, leading together with Bula for the first stretch, leaving Miss Visayan to play catch-up. Gary and crew however played the conditions well, eventually overtaking the dash and the sprint to claim line honours and victory in her class. Bula emerged the better of the remaining 2, securing the remaining spot on the podium.

Addiction continue to represent to beach catamaran fleet in her usual fashion – late across the start and playing catch-up. This time, she struggled to overtake all the multihulls, something she usually manages with ease. She eventually crossed the finish line just behind Miss Visayan,  possibly a sign of her struggles with the erratic conditions.

Congratulations to all the winners – see you next week for more racing as we conduct the 2nd race of the Twilight Series III.

CSC Twilight Series III 2024 (Race 1)

6th October 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Twilight Series/by CSC

As the southwest monsoon weather wanes, we now welcome the inter-monsoon season, where rain and flukey winds are the common denominator. After a pleasant start to the Sunday Series III last week, the commencement of the third Twilight Series for 2024 was fraught with patchy and weakening winds – paired with a strong outgoing tide. The intimate fleet of 11 boats made the most of it, and a pragmatic approach by the race committee led to a shortened course for all classes.

In the Multihull class, we welcome the return of Kaze, as skipper Xavier brings a secret weapon (ex-skipper and owner, Damien) along for the upcoming races to mount a serious challenge for top spot. Reigning champion Miss Visayan felt the heat, as Kaze drew first blood by mastering the light air and overtaking the initial leaders to claim her first bullet for the series. Sirius Swift is shaping up to be perennial podium resident, as her consistent attendance and 3rd place results have yielded rewards in the overall standings. Today was no different, with Eugene and team securing 3rd after recovering from an overlay of the finish line.

We note another consistent player on the course, as Shardana scores another 3rd place finish to make it a successful podium result over consecutive weekends. The Dufour 34 is now in the safe and enthusiastic hands of Tony and crew, and he seems to be thoroughly enjoying the boat so far! She trails fierce rivals Waka Tere and Jock, both boats no stranger to the podium. Waka Tere exhibited incredible boat speed in yesterday’s light air, performing well enough to catch up with the IRC fleet! Jock also did well to sail to her handicap, keeping Waka Tere’s lead to the minimum, eventually succeeding in placing first on corrected time.

A showdown between 2 dutch skippers unfolded in the IRC class, as Adona and Minx were neck and neck during the race. The latter’s performance was underscored by an incredible solo effort, and was deservingly rewarded with a triumph over the J29 and her first bullet for the series. Jong Dee welcomes back the return of skipper and owner, Paul Kendall. The J35 thrives in heavier breeze, but Paul and crew made the most of the prevailing conditions to finish the race in 3rd.

Congratulations to all winners – see you on 13th October for the 2nd race of the Sunday Series III!
