CSC Sunday Series II 2024 (Race 2)

29th July 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

Back-to-back racing this weekend has left us pretty exhausted, as the Club had the pleasure of not only Twilight and Sunday Series taking place, but the month-end monthly dinghy race featuring over 30 sailors organized concurrently as well. Blessed with consistent breeze from a south-easterly direction, all the boats on water lapped up the beautiful sailing conditions to end the week on a positive note.

The Sunday Series II saw a smaller fleet participate, perhaps some teams struggle to find sufficient crew to run a spinnaker programme onboard. Nevertheless, the boats in attendance got to enjoy an afternoon of smooth sailing (albeit some dinghy dodging required), as sailors were brought to Tekong Buoy and back in a classic pennant 4 course.

In the absence of most of the fleet, the IRC Class was represented by 2 Js: Jong Dee and Adona. Both boats were closely matched on the course, and were separated by less than a minute across the finish line. Despite the J35’s best efforts, the J29 emerged the quicker of the 2, subsequently claiming a comfortable bullet on corrected time. Some credit should go to the crew on Adona, who despite Ad’s absence, adapted quickly to stand-in skipper Ed’s helmsmanship.

The same faces return to contest in the PY Class, with one new entrant to spice things up in the fleet. Wild Thing, a reflex 28 formally based in Raffles Marina organised their first participation in the Sunday Series, hopefully the start of many more fruitful weekend sailing campaigns. At the top half of the fleet, Birregurra finally scored the elusive bullet, ending the weekend on a high. She fends off strong performances from her lighter and more agile competitors, as her waterline length and stability proved advantageous in the heavier conditions. Forever Young survived near-broach situations on the stretch to squance, earning the team a well-deserved 2nd on corrected time. Twilight Series II Race 2 winners Waka Tere completed the podium in their favourite position – 3rd, another impressive feat from the Nelson.

Miss Visayan, Dot Dot Dot, Bula and Kaze return to battle on the Multihull class, and the fight for top spot could not be any closer! After an hour of racing, Miss V and Dot Dot Dot were neck and neck at the finish line – with the former crossing the line one second ahead. Kudos to both boats, and special commendations to David, skipper of Dot Dot Dot for completing this weekend of races completely solo. Bula bounced back from Saturday’s Main halyard mishap, and rounded up the winners in 3rd.

Congratulations to all winners, it has been a great weekend of sailing. We return for more on 4th August (Sunday Series II, Race 3). See you next week!

CSC Twilight Series II 2024 (Race 2)

28th July 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Twilight Series/by CSC

After the successful conclusion of the RSYC Regatta on 21 July, almost all the participating CSC teams made an impressive effort to return in time for the Twilight and Sunday Series races this weekend. We kick off with Race 2 of the Twilight Series II, in a fluctuating but sufficient breeze from a south-easterly direction. Sailors also had to contend with a significant outgoing tide, adding to the list of challenges posed in what was supposed to be a simple course between squance and changi buoys. Even though we had a total of 15 boats taking part, we continue to miss the beach catamarans this season. We’re eager to witness their return to the scene, as we embrace the southwest monsoon conditions.

The Multihulls had a healthy representation of 5 boats in the fleet, with the fastest boat off the start line unfortunately ending up as the only boat to retire early from the race. After executing the best start routine of the fleet, Bula had a main halyard malfunction, forcing the team into an early retirement. This presented Miss Visayan with an opportunity, as the RSYC Regatta winner took home the victory comfortably ahead of the rest of the fleet. Dot Dot Dot’s solo effort reaped rewards, earning skipper David a well-deserved 2nd. Kaze’s return to racing with Freddy at the helm scored the team a place on the podium, rounding up the winners for the class.

In the IRC Class, Simba continued their win-streak, making it 2 bullets from 2 twilight races. If the team continues to display similar form in the rest of the races, Skipper Atul looks poised to secure the series II title. Another commendable display of consistency came from Adona. The team had upgraded from a dynamic duo to a terrific trio crew set-up for Race 2. The added hands and skillset onboard may have helped the J29 to close the gap with Simba, but need just that little bit more to give the Dehler 39 a run for her money. Jong Dee navigated the challenging conditions well to complete the podium in 3rd. Despite their less-than-ideal performance, the team on Red Rum One were all smiles, as they look forward to their evening itinerary at Ketam, enjoying a weekend campout.

While we missed a few faces since the last race in the PY Class, it was still the largest fleet in participation, registering a total of 6 boats on the start line. An exciting bunch-up at CSC 1 right after the start reaffirms the level of competitiveness in this fleet. Of the four boats in the mix, three ended up on the podium, a clear indication that good starts are important. Waka Tere topped the table, placing ahead of Birregurra and Jock in 2nd and 3rd respectively. A win from Waka Tere means that she now enters Race 3 tied on points with Birregurra, a close contest between the rivals!

We now prepare for Race 2 of the Sunday Series II today, making it a double-event weekend. This is due to a rescheduling effort to accommodate the recently concluded RSYC Regatta and upcoming Western Circuit Sailing Regatta in August. Congratulations to all winners and here’s wishing everyone fair winds this afternoon.

CSC Twilight Series II 2024 (Race 1)

14th July 2024/in Competitive Racing, Regattas, Sailing, Twilight Series/by CSC

Amidst the recent oil spill recovery and reinstatement efforts along the southern coast of Singapore, we are reminded not to take our coastline and water space for granted. CSC is fortunate to continue our sailing activities and programmes with minimal disruptions, and one such activity is our fortnightly Twilight Series. Despite this being the weekend before the RSYC Regatta, we commenced Series II with a healthy attendance of 15 boats across 3 classes, thankfully paired with some decent southerly breeze.

The IRC Class was represented by Red Rum One, Jong Dee, Adona and Simba. With the absence of her owner, Adona was skippered and crewed by the dynamic duo of Luke and Claire. The J29 gave it a good shot, and fared well against her larger rivals, successfully pipping Jong Dee by a mere 6 seconds at the finish line! When the numbers were crunched, she secured a 2nd on the podium, also just nudging down Steve Manning’s Red Rum One. The Archambault 40 was leading from start to finish, but struggled to put the distance on the fleet in the occasionally patchy wind conditions. Simba emerged the best of the four, claiming the first bullet for the series. Skipper Atul’s intense travelling plans for the next 2 months may mean a challenging outlook for the rest of the season.

Boasting 8 boats on the course, the PY Class showcases a diverse range of boats and sailors. New entrant Alyssa Lim and Jakub Kogut signed up for 2 months of fun, entering a GK24 and Maxi Fenix respectively for Series II. The former was formerly a national dinghy sailor, and her performance was nothing short of impressive. Slingshot held her own amongst larger and quicker boats in the fleet, and Alyssa did it single-handed, no less. Her victory was well deserved, and served as the perfect birthday present for the young skipper. Birregurra was a content bridesmaid, scoring 2nd place on corrected time, making it two successful runner-up results in consecutive weekends. Completing the podium would be the way-wise Waka Tere, who survived engine issues prior to the race, and managed to safely completed the race on a positive note. Special mention goes out to Summer Breeze, for successfully attempting their first Twilight Race! Lets not forget that the PY fleet is all about encouraging participation, and we hope to see Jakub and crew return for more.

Miss Visayan and Bula return for another episode of exciting rivalry, this time joined by the eye-catching Sirius Swift. Bula could not replicate her performance from last week, and were left playing catch up on the Twilight course. Gary and team successful redeemed themselves in what looked like a fairly comfortable race for Miss Visayan. Despite missing out on a podium position, the Corsair 880 certainly displayed moments of brilliance – and we look forward to closer competition in Race 2.

Congratulations to all winners, and good luck to all teams participating in the RSYC Regatta on 20-21 July! We’d also like to take this opportunity to wish Alyssa (Slingshot) and Paul (Jong Dee) a very happy birthday – thank you for sharing this special day with us!

We resume racing for the Twilight and Sunday Series on 27 and 28 July respectively.

CSC Sunday Series II 2024 (Race 1)

8th July 2024/in Regattas, Sailing, Sunday Series/by CSC

After an extended break in May-June (apart from those who had fun racing with us in Tioman!), sailors were treated to all sorts of weather conditions on the first race of the Sunday Series II, keeping the tacticians on their toes. The promised southwest monsoon winds did not deliver until mid afternoon, with the start being delayed for 30 minutes in hopes of better conditions. 2 conflicting weather systems eventually brought some wind with them, and the delayed start meant that the 14 participating boats had to start in significantly stronger currents. With the uncertain outlook, organisers played it safe, opting to deploy a pennant 1 flag for all classes – taking participants to Changi Buoy and back.

The Multihull class was represented by 4 corsairs on the course, as the regular fleet welcome back old hand Damien Geoffray at the helm of Kaze. Having gone many months without racing in our waters, the french skipper had to shake off the rust before settling into a comfortable groove. Despite displaying good boat speed, touching both CSC 1 and Changi Buoy in the process and not taking her penalty in the proper manner proved costly for Kaze, eventually choosing to retire for the race. As a result, Bula and Miss Visayan who were just seconds behind, claimed 1st and 2nd respectively. Dot Dot Dot also claimed her spot on the podium, completing the winners’ list in 3rd.

In the PY Class, Waka Tere drew first blood, taking an early lead after the start to claim both line honours and victory on corrected time. The performance bodes well for her upcoming participation at the RSYC Regatta. The strong current and light airs did not do the big boats any favours, as Birregurra and Remington struggled to maintain their respective positions in the fleet. The former however managed to emerge mostly unscathed, scoring a 2nd place finish on handicap. The Hanse 415 successfully kept the nippy Sonar at bay, as Brio was acknowledged as the best of the rest, securing the remaining position on the podium.

With their recently renewed certificates, the IRC fleet exuded a refreshed enthusiasm, totaling 5 boats in attendance. The usual suspects have returned to vie for top spot, with only Jellico and Born in Fire missing in action. A perfect start was not enough to secure Jong Dee a spot on the podium, as the J35 was left puzzled by the tricky conditions on the course. She was not the only victim – I am sure many sailors found the shifty and patchy conditions quite challenging. The other J in the fleet had better fortunes, as Adona produced impressive boat speeds for parts of the course – giving her an edge on the fleet and keeping close to leaders Red Rum One. When the numbers were tallied, Adona earned her first bullet for the series, and Red Rum One had to settle for third, with another commendable performance by Team Minx securing the X342 second place on corrected time.

Congratulations to all winners – see you all on Saturday for the first race of Twilight Series II (hopefully in more inspiring weather).
