CSC @ Tioman Regatta 2026

20th June 2026/in CSC@Tioman Regatta, Competitive Racing, Cruising, Regattas, Sailing/by CSC

We’ve just returned from the fourth edition of the CSC @ Tioman Regatta, and what a week it was! From the lush mountainous backdrop to the crystal-clear waters, Tioman once again provided the perfect setting for a memorable week of sailing, racing, and exploration.

CSC – Tioman Passage Race (13–14 June)

The regatta commenced on 13 June with all participating boats setting off on a 110-nautical-mile overnight passage from Changi Sailing Club to Pulau Tioman.

This year’s conditions were exceptional, with favourable winds and currents helping every class break the existing passage record. What made the race even more remarkable was how closely matched the fleet remained throughout. After more than 20 hours of racing, boats arrived within sight of one another, adding another layer of excitement to the competition.

The first two boats to finish belonged to the Multihull Class. Dot Dot Dot and Bula staged a thrilling battle across the Singapore Strait and South China Sea. Dot Dot Dot, skippered by David Steel, enjoyed a significant lead for much of the passage, but Mike Flecker’s Bula persevered and stayed in the pressure, steadily reducing the gap on the final approach to Tioman. At the finish, only three minutes separated the two boats after more than 21 hours of racing — an outstanding performance by both crews.

The third boat to arrive was Roxanne. While she crossed the finish line several hours later, we’re certain the Seawind 1260 enjoyed a considerably more comfortable journey than the two leading Corsairs.

In the Keelboat Division, Born in Fire claimed victory both across the line and on corrected time. Skipper Thomas Reckefuss and his X-99 completed the passage in 23 hours, 43 minutes and 29 seconds, setting a new course record.

The chasing fleet arrived together, with Firstlight, Kaizen and Forever Young crossing the finish line in quick succession. Once the numbers were crunched, Forever Young emerged in second place. This was despite a no-show from one of her crew members, who reportedly claimed his alarm failed to go off. Congratulations to Jasper and team on a well-earned result.

John Bateman’s Kaizen prevailed over the mighty Firstlight to complete the podium in third place. Despite narrowly missing out on silverware, Simon and family were all smiles upon arrival. It is also worth noting that Firstlight boasted the oldest sailor in the fleet — Simon’s father, Mr David Piff, who at 91 years young once again proved that age is just a number.

Tioman Series (16–17 June)

After a well-deserved break ashore, sailors returned to the racecourse for three windward-leeward races, followed by the scenic Round Tulai Race to conclude the regatta.

Once again, the wind gods were kind. Competitors enjoyed steady 8–12-knot breezes on Day 1, followed by lighter but manageable 6–8-knot conditions on Day 2, allowing all four scheduled races to be completed successfully.

In the Keelboat Division, Forever Young overcame a costly leeward-mark mishap in Race 2 to claim overall victory in the Tioman Series with four points after one discard. It capped off what appeared to be a thoroughly enjoyable week for Jasper and his youthful crew.

Kaizen’s lightweight three-person configuration and strong off-wind performance paid dividends in the Round Tulai Race, where she outpaced the fleet to secure victory on Day 2. That result proved decisive, giving her second place overall, just one point ahead of Firstlight.

Simon and his crew endured their fair share of challenges throughout the series, from an unexpected trawling incident to becoming trapped in a wind hole on the return leg from Tulai. It was a true test of resilience and endurance for the Firstlight team.

The largest boat in the fleet was also making her regatta debut. Marc van der Chijs’ Liberty 3 joined this year’s event and, despite her best efforts, managed to complete three of the four scheduled races, recording a best finish of second place in Race 2. Congratulations to Marc and crew — we hope to see more of Liberty 3 at future CSC events.

In the Multihull Class, sailors pursued a variety of adventures throughout the week.

Bula opted to skip Day 1 racing in favour of exploring Juara Bay on Tioman’s eastern shore. Bumfuzzle made a similar decision, choosing cruising over competition. Dot Dot Dot, meanwhile, withdrew from the Round Tulai Race midway through to enjoy a cooling swim stop at Pulau Tulai — arguably a wise choice, considering the wind disappeared shortly afterwards.

In the end, consistency proved decisive. Roxanne completed all four scheduled races, earning her the Tioman Series title. Dot Dot Dot finished best of the rest, with victories in Races 1 and 2 securing second place overall.

Thank You

We look forward to welcoming you back on the water as club racing resumes next week.

See you at Changi Sailing Club.
